Garmin Vista HCx showing an old version of the openmtbmap

Garmin PNAs The maps are compatible with nearly all Garmin PNAs with a color screen (e.g. Legend/Vista HCx and Cx, 60/76CSx, Oregon, Colorado,Edge 705, Nuvi, Streetmap).

Garmin Mapsource 6.16.3 or newer (Windows based PC/Wine/ Mac) Mapsource compatible – I recommend using 6.16.3. If you have not yet installed Mapsource – here is how to do it: http://openmtbmap.org/tutorials/install-mapsource/

Attention. Mapsource versions older than 6.16.1 do now show all streets and ways, so do not use them with the openmtbmaps. Also note that Mapsource does not show contourlines at the same time as the maps (Basecamp does though).

Garmin Basecamp - Perfectly compatible starting with version 3.

Qlandkarte GT (since version 0.17) – Cross Platform www.qlandkarte.org - no autorouting support though. Comes with most Linux distributions, binaries for Windows available, other platforms need to compile. Best use latest version. There are constant improvements.

PDA, Smartphone (Windows CE or ME) Also compatible with Garmin Mobile XT (installable to any Windows Smartphone) – Garmin Mobile XT does. If you don't want to buy Garmin Mobile XT there is also Glopus (as of version 2.02 beta or higher) and Qlandkarte M which you can try. Neither of the latter supports autorouting however. Some POI are not shown on Mobile XT. Areas and ways/roads/highways are all correctly shown. Note also I'm not sure if all roads/lines are shown.

Incompatibilities: Iphone, IQue 3600 (and others?), old Garmin handhelds without color screen and (micro)SD card. Any other program or PNA that doesn't support .TYP-files. (like TTQV, Compegps,….)

Oregon / Dakota / 62 series / edge 800 and streetname bug:

I spent a lot of time to find out what exactly could cause the Oregon (if no beta firmware installed) or the edge 800 to drop streetnames (or more correctly the labels of it on the devices). After having another idea, I got it solved by providing a lot of testmaps to User Ritzenflitzer on mtb-news.de forum.

The problem is related to the fact, that the devices stop showing any streetname labels, if one of the types 0×00 to 0×07 (and 0x0b) labels are set to invisible. This however not only to the map that is currently active, but to all maps on the GPS, and only showing up after a hard reset.

Therefore here is what you have to do if you are plagued with this problem. Only use openmtbmaps from May 6. 2011 update onwards on your GPS and do a hardreset to get the maps shown with streetlabels. However watch out, there are plenty of other maps that can cause this problem. Most notably the Garmin Topo Deutschland 2010 as coming preinstalled on microSD memory card (the dvd version is fine though with default typfile). There are several other (mainly OSM based) maps that hide labels of theese types, so be careful, if you include any of them on your GPS, the streetnames will not be shown (sorry, cannot tell you which, just try it out yourself ).

Note that this bug happens with Garmin maps too (like Topo Deutschland 2010) and is a firmware bug, that hopefully gets fixed in the future.

Address Search:

For address search to work, you must send the maps with Mapsource or Basecamp. Note that this is still a bit experimental, and sometimes addresses are lost and not in the index. Also no seraching for housenumbers yet (though you have to enter a housenumber). I recommend buying and installing Garmin City Navigator maps, to have working address search on the GPS (you have to deactive the City Navigator map though, so it is not used for autorouting or shown): More on this here:

http://openmtbmap.org/about-2/howto-search-addresses/

Not that some OSM based maps (those were you can search for addresses as POI) may run havoc and crash the POI search (definitely on etrex series). This happens as soon as the map is on the GPS, it does not have to be active.

  • Is it possible to get the open mtb maps to work in this garminfone (with gps)? I've got a gmapsupp.img copied to the /garmin folder, but I can't get the map on the screen (yet). Your hell is much appreciated. Keep up the good work! I really like open MTB.
    regards,
    anton

Can anyone confirm if these maps can be installed on an Android phone?

    Hey guys!
I just found your page and I’m amazed about what you’ve here! “Chappeau” great work!
Now I have one simple question:

Does your maps work on Garmin Etrex Venture HC?

    Thanks for your answer!

    • admin

Well in theory yes, but limited memory makes it no fun, and maybe there are single tiles that are already too big to fit on the Venture. Also the processor of the Venture HC is a lot (really a lot) slower than legend HCx or Vista HCx.

    Hello,

Here some Information to the compatibility, I found out after some investigations, with the map update 4/23/2010

Base Camp v3.0.2 Windows: Nothing notably

Base Camp v3.0.1 OSX: Huge differences at displaying the Map. Most of the lines are much finer than in the Windows version. Especially Motorways in high zoom levels are really bad. The routing is OK. Everything else is fully functional.

OS X Road Trip: All lines are displayed as in the Windows Version of Base Camp. The Routing is OK. Everything else is fully functional.

It is amazing to see the differences between OSX Base Camp and Road Trip. Even in the base map of Garmin there are differences.

Oregon 300. Without testing the routing during a MTB trail. Displaying the maps is as expected good. The auto routing seems to work well.

Zumo 660: Due to the higher resolution of the display some lines are hardly visible. There is an issue displaying motorways in high zoom levels. They just disappear. The routing works fine.

There is an issue to convert the maps for use in OSX with gmapi builder. I’ll post it and a workaround in the Mac Tutorial page.

Alles andere funktioniert.

Having recently bought a Garmin Dakota 20 and come across your site, I've found the GB map and contour lines work fine. There are some local paths and lanes missing from the map, so this excellent offering will spur me on to fill in some of the missing details on OSM.
    Keep up the good work!

Just to confirm I managed to get a map loaded on Garmin Mobile XT runnining on My Nokia N95 8gb (Symbian OS v9.2, S60 3rd Edition)

Need to spend more time testing, but everything seems good so far :)

Under “Incompatibilities” you state “old Garmin handhelds without color screen and (micro)SD card”.

I have an original mono screen eTrex Vista, which has only internal memory (24MB ?). I uploaded to it a couple of sections of the GB map, without routing data. I have only panned and zoomed the map a bit as a quick test, but your maps seem to work with it just fine.

    • Well, you are not able to see the waytypes properly. Of course the map runs fine, but what appears to be a highway will be displayed as path and so on. So in effect it would take a long time getting used to it. Of course it’s fine to use Mapsource, upload routes and tracks, but the ways will be very difficult to distinguish, and some not shown at all I expect.

Thank you for this project. I tried it on Mapsource for windows and it worked fin. I would like to use it on my Mac (Macsource for Mac), but i don't know to install. I tried to use mapconvert (windows program to convert maps for mac) but i doesn't finds the installed maps. Any idea?
