Openmtbmaps and Contourlines

 

 

Now the most popular openmtbmap maps come with contourlines integrated

Note that since end of January 2012 the most popular openmtbmap maps have contourlines integrated, the text below is therefore for most people only for reference. On installation you can now select whether or not to also install the contourlines.

 

Introduction to the non integrated contourlines data formats:

There are three different download formats in which you can get the contourlines.

a) as gmapsupp.img format. That format is ready to be simply put in /garmin folder on "new generation" outdoor GPS like etrex 20/30, all Dakota/Oregon/Colorado or GPSMaps 62/76, edge 800 and Monata. It will also work on many Nuvi. There are however also other older Garmin GPS devices, that only accept 1 gmapsupp.img file, for them you have to use Mapsource/Basceamp (or advanced gmaptool) to send/assemble the maps for your GPS — see b) and c)

b) as installable file (.exe). Just download and install the contourlines and then use Mapsource/Basecamp or Qlandkarte GT to transfer the contourlines to your GPS

c) as .zip file. Just use your favourite unzipper (I recommend 7-zip) to extract them – then use them with Qlandkarte GT or join them to other maps using the batch files (see howto below).

 

b) and c) are more or less identical (or in fact identical once installed . a) on the other hand cannot be (easily) integrated into desktop applications. It is only useful to be used as is on your GPS device.

 

 

Get The Contourlines and send them as a seperate map to your GPS

You have to download the contourlines seperately – they are to be found below the normal maps. Get them here http://openmtbmap.org/download/#contourlines

You can download them .exe or as .zip.

If you simply want to use them as transparent maps on your GPS (they will be displayed on top of any other map) — then you need to do nothing but just run the .exe and send the contourline maps to your GPS like any other map from Mapsource/Basecamp/Qlandkarte GT. They will show up as a seperate map in the map selection tool. (just for those curious, the map FID is the 4 for digits of the mapnames, plus 300).


–  If you don't want to use Mapsource/Basecamp/Qlandkarte GT for the above, and use Windows XP or above, you can also doubleclick on "create_contourline_gmapsupp.img.bat" (get it from here: contourline_scripts.zip )
This creates a gmapsupp.img which you can directly put onto the \garmin folder on your gps or \garmin folder on your memory card (note, this is only practical for newer GPS that accept gmapsupp.img renamed to other names).


If you want to see the contourline maps at the same time as another map on your computer, then follow the steps below. For the info below you can either use the contourlines from the .exe or from the .zip downloads.


Install Contourline Maps in Basecamp together with the normal openmtbmaps.

Get the contourlines either as .exe or .zip and extract them (note you can extract the .exe).

I tried to make this installation as failproof as possible and this means for me to go with gmaptool  and cgpsmammper or with gmaptool and mkgmap.
If you use the script with mkgmap.jar you have to install Sun Java (JDK 1.6) and download mkgmap from http://www.mkgmap.org.uk/snapshots/mkgmap-latest.tar.gz

Attention: if you use the batchfiles "with_mkgmap.jar", you need to have at least as much available RAM as the size of the maps (select all 6*.img and 7*.img). On 32bit systems there is furthermore a barrier of about 1100MB of maps. Else it may fail, or you might need to wait a very long time (could be hours) for completion.

a) install them together.

Add the 7*.img from the contourline download (after extraction), to your normal map folder, and run create_mapsource_installationfiles.bat or run create_mapsource_installationfiles_with_mkgmap.bat (by using the mkgmap batch, a new address index is generated). Note you need to have all maps (6*.img), all contourlines maps (7*.img), the batches (.bat), and the .TYP-file inside the same folder. This folder can be the same as for the normal openmtbmap installation. Also mkgmap.jar should be the latest version. If mkgmap.jar is older than the version used to create the openmtbmaps, it may fail.

Note that currently only Basecamp 3 will show the contourlines on top of the normal maps (as well as all GPS). Mapsource does not show contourlines.

You can throw together as many contourline maps and normal maps into the folder as you like. They will all be munged into a new map. (make sure not to install two maps with the same FID, use mapsettoolkit to check if in doubt).

Mapsource 6.16 and Basecamp v 3 will show altitude profiles for routes (using autorouting, not direct routing) but not for tracks. (this were different if we had a real DEM, and not only contourlines – but it is not known how to legally do this).

Please note: frequently update "mkgmap.jar". If mkgmap is older than the openmtbmaps, it may lead to serious problems (like Mapsource/Basecamp crashing on mapselection) or the gmapsupp.img being unreadable on your GPS.


b) Sending Contourlines and openmtbmap maps as one combined map to the GPS


Simply put the openmtbmap maps AND contourliens of your choice into a folder, and doubleclick on create_gmapsupp.img.bat (needs to be inside the same folder) (Note: use the create_gmapsupp.img.bat from the normal map folder, the batch from old contourline downloads will not work)
This creates a gmapsupp.img that can be directly placed onto the external data card of your GPS or in the internal memory in the /garmin folder and off you go. Some newer units like Oregon or Dakota with newest firmware can even use any gmapsupp.img be it named gmapsupp.img or openmtb.img so for updating your maps you have more choice.

    Hallo,
    Zuallerst mal vielen Dank für die super Karten. Habe dank dieser schon einige tolle Touren in meiner Umgebung gemacht!
    Bei der Installation der Karten mit Höhenlinien habe ich bei der Darstellung in MapSource (6.16.3) jedoch ein Problem. Je nach Zoomstufe werden mir die Höhelinien nicht richtig dargestellt. Zoome ich dann hinein oder heraus, dann werden sie sichtbar aber nicht bei allen Kartenkacheln bei der gleichen Zoomstufe. Bei den srmt_only-maps sind die höhenkurven dann sichtbar. Ich benutze neben der openmtbmap noch TopoSchweiz V 1.1 und City Navigator Europe NT 2008 10.01 – haben die vielleicht einen negativen Einfluss?

    ich habe folgende fehlermeldung bekommen und befolge mal die anweisung ;)
    Could not create global index file
    it seems like Java is installed on this PC but not working correctly.
    Please check that below java JRE version is 1.6 or higher

    Hallo extremecarver
    habe allerhand versucht –  aber leider ohne erfolg:(
    beim versuch mit create_mapsource_installationfiles_with_mkgmap.bat hat er die java versionnicht akzeptiert (ich habe mehrere ausprobiert auch auf Windows 7 und Windows XP.)
    beim versuch  mit create_mapsource_installationfiles.bat erhalte ich folgenden Fehler:
    maptk.exe and gmt.exe found

    …deleted
    Dateiname existiert bereits, oder die Datei
    konnte nicht gefunden werden.
    ….deleted
    Habe jetzt schon einige Stunden damit verbracht. besten dank für die Hilfe.

    wollte heute die Höhenlinien installieren (nicht das erste mal das ich das mache).
    Ich habe Java RTE 1.6.0_24 installiert aber die Erstellung mit mkgmap-r1894 hat nicht funktioniert.
    Die Fehlermeldung besagt, dass Java nicht richtig funktioniert. (möglicherweise liegt es an 64bit Win7 ???)

    Beim Versuch, die Höhenlinien mit create_mapsource_installationfiles_with_mkgmap.bat zu installieren, wird die installierte Java-Version bemängelt, obwohl neuer als die verlangte. Oder liegt der Fehler doch wo anders?

    Hi all! Erhalte beim Ansehen (Vergrösserung) in Mapsource V 6.13.7 nach erfolgreicher Installation über "create_mapsource_installationsfiles_with_mkgmap.bat" und "installation_openmtbmap_AT_srtm_7365.bat" – mit FID 7365 bzw. auch selbiges mit 8365 – einen Programmabbruch mit nachstehende Fehlermeldung:
    Weiß jemand Abhilfe? Thx!

    Hallo
    Ich habe ein Problem mit den Höhenlinien in Deutschland. Sie sind richtig angezeigt in deer KArte. Wenn ich jedoch ein Höhenprofil einer Route ansehe, stimmen die Höhenangaben nicht. Zum Teil gibt die Grafik 2m statt 200m an, dann wechselt sie nach ein paar Kilometer zu 0,3m statt 300 . Hat jemand ähnliche Erfahrungen?

    recipe for linux (ubuntu): works with qlandkartegt:
    1) download the map file
    2) download the contour file
    3) extract the map files
    4) extract the contour files into the same directory
    5) install mkgmap to create a new garmin contour map sudo aptitude install mkgmap
    6) download gmt for linux, to set the colour tiles transparent:
       http://www.anpo.republika.pl/files/lgmt042a.zip
    7) cd /your/path/to/map_and_countour_files
    8) /your/path/to/gmt -w -t 7*
    9)create the map for all 7*.img files (for more useful options may read the mkgmap manpage):
      mkgmap –show-profiles=1 –family-id=7371 –product-id=1 –series-name=srtm –family-name=srtm –tdbfile –overview-mapname=mapset7371 –area-name="de_de_openmtbmap.org" 7*
    10) now start qlandkartegt and load both tdb files
    voila
    PS: if unsure about some steps, download the contour scripts from above and read the create_mapsource_contourline_installationfiles_with_mkgmap.bat file

    Ein Hallo an alle !
    Mein Problem. Ich habe alle Karten mit Höhenlinienen versehen gem. a2)
    Leider funktioniert nur die Deutschlandkarte nicht. Es kommt bei MapSource sowie bei BaseCamp
    immer eine Fehlermeldung (Senden an Garmin oder weiter) wenn ich die Kacheln anwähle.
    Ich habe mehrmals die Karte deinstalliert und wieder installiert danach wieter gem. a2)
    Alle anderen Karten (Schweiz, Österreich, Alpen) funktionieren ausgezeichnet.
    BS = WIN7
    Wer kann helfen, wo liegt das Problem? D-Karte hat ja die größte Kapa. Vielleicht liegt das Problem daran.
    Ich könnte auch mit der Ba-Wü und Bayern Karte arbeiten, aber für die gibt es keine Höhenlinien, oder?

    Da sich schon seit längerer Zeit die Contourlines nicht fehlerfrei in Mapsource einbinden lassen, sondern nur mit Basecamp gehen: wäre es möglich die Karten wieder mit einem SRTM Typfile anzubieten? Meinetwegen auch mit dem Installationshinweis: NUR für Mapsource verwenden und NICHT zur Übertragung ans GPS vorgesehen. Im Moment verwende ich den alten SRTM Typfile und BAT Dateien um vernünftig Höhenlinien zu sehen, leider werden dadurch einige Wegtypen nicht so dargestellt, wie gewollt. Mit Basecamp möchte ich nicht arbeiten, da ich die Routenweiterführung nach verschieben der Karte mit der Maus extrem umständlich finde.
    Falls das nicht in Deiner Absicht ligt, wäre ich über einen Tip dankbar wie ich ein funktionierendes SRTM Typfile selber erstellen kann.

      Ist mir zuviel Aufwand. Selber — einfach die infragekommenden Polygone wie Wald etc transparten machen und den weißen Kartenhintergrund loeschen.

        Basierend auf dem CLAS*.TYP habe ich ein Mapsource kompatibles SRTM TYPFILE erstellt, bei dem SRTM Karten nicht fehlerhaft in Mapsource angezeigt werden. Wenn Du evtl. Ineresse an dem TYPFILE hast, bitte Bescheid sagen, damit ich es Dir zusenden kann. Ich werd sicher nicht der einzige gewesen sein, der sich über die fehlerhafte Darstellung in Mapsource geärgert hat.

    Ich habe mir die aktuellen Karten und Höhenlinien heruntergeladen und alle benötigen Daten in einen Ordner gepackt, Java installiert und dann die Datei "create_mapsource_installationfiles_with_mkgmap" ausgeführt. Die Batch Datei startet und ich kann auch noch eine FID, das Länderkürzel und die Art der Karten (Auswahl 0-3) eintragen.
    Danach reklamiert die Batch-Routine, dass die Datei "test1.tdb" nicht verfügbar ist und beginnt die Routine wieder von vorne usw. usw.
    Hat jemand von euch eine Idee, woran das liegen kann bzw. wie man das Problem lösen kann?

    ich habe heute die aktuelle Alps Karte 18.06 mit den aktuellen Höhenlinien in  mapsettoolkit 1.77 neu gerechnet. (Mapsource 6.16.1 aktuell).
    Gibt es einen Trick? Leider kann man nur in Zoomstufe 1,5km Höhenlinien sehen, in ein Zoomstufen 1km (z.B. Mellau Bregenzerwald) sind große Löcher bei den Höhenlinien, ansonsten sieht man in anderen Zoomstufen nur Zahlen der Höhenangaben.
    Liegt es an draw-prority oder Transparenz-Einstellung? Oder wo sucht man?

      Note that only Mapsource 6.16.2 or later as well as Basecamp 3 will show the contourlines on top of the normal maps. The srtm typfile is depreceated as it is not anymore needed (Mapsource 6.16 or Basecamp 3 are good enough to finally replace Mapsource 6.13.6 which I recommended over the last years).

    Hallo,
    ein tolles Projekt und genau das, was mit die letzten Jahre gefehlt hat. Danke dafür.
     
    Nun das Problem ;-)
    Beim Routen über Mapsource stürzt das Programm bei mir fast immer ab (fast, manchmal funktioniert es 4-5 Mal). Meistens schon wenn ich den ersten Routenpunkt setze. Habe das Problem unter XP auf meinem Desktop PC und unter Windows 7 auf meinem Notebook.
    Habe schon verschiedene Einstellungen ausprobiert und sehe in den Abstürzen leider kein Muster. Mapsource meldet einen Fehler (Fehlerbericht senden ja/nein usw.) und wird nach dem Bestätigen "Nein" dann beendet.
     
    Was kann ich noch ändern/ausprobieren um dies zu verhindern oder dem Fehler auf die Spur zu kommen?

        Die Karten sind die aktuellen aus den hier geposteten Links. Habe nochmal nachgesehen.
        Aber ich habe jetzt doch ein Muster erkannt. Wenn ich z.B. direkt auf ein Parkplatzsymbol klicke, stürzt MapSource sofort ab. Klicke ich daneben auf einen Weg oder eine Straße, läuft alles nromal.
        Aber Ich bin hier wohl auch im falschen Bereich, sorry :-(   Das Problem ist nämlich auch ohne installierte Höhenlinien vorhanden.

          Das scheint ein Mapsource 6.16 Problem zu sein. Sollte in 6.16.2 (welches ziemlich bald rauskommt) behoben werden. Schau mal ob die neue Basecamp v 3.0.5 hier auch abstürzt. Wenn nicht, dann wird es in 6.16.2 passen.

            Danke für den Tip. Werde ich dann abwarten und testen. Das Problem tritt übrigens auch mit der Garmin Topo (erste Version) auf.
            Kann das denn sonst noch jemand nachvollziehen oder ist das nur bei mir so? Ich habe die Kommentare zu den verschiedenen Themen hier mal durchsucht, aber nichts gefunden.
             
            Und nochmals vielen Dank für die wirklich starke Arbeit hier. Die Möglichkeit des Routens mit spezifischen  MTB Optionen ist genial.

    Hallo,
    ich nochmal.
    Die Höhendaten habe ich jetzt drin. Ich habe einmal die Karte ohne Höhendaten und einmal nur Höhendaten für das eTrex erstellt / eingebunden. Dann habe ich noch eine Kombination von Höhendaten und Karte für die Planung mit MS erstellt und eingebunden.

    1. Frage: auf meinem eTrex möchte ich mit möglichst wenigen Klicks alle Höhendaten ein und ausblenden. Geht das ohne jede einzelne Kachel in den Optionen aus / anzuwählen?

    2. (wichtigere) Frage: von den Höhendaten sehe ich im Moment nur die Zahl in MS (Angabe der Höhe) und nicht die Linie (siehe hier http://picfu.net/422f77). Eine srtm*.typ Datei wie in den Anleitungen angegeben finde ich leider nicht. Wie kann ich auch die Linien sichtbar machen? Bei “only srtm” sind die Linien in MS sichtbar (http://picfu.net/7a17fc).

    3. Frage: Gibt es irgendwo die Höhendaten von den Kanarischen Inseln zur Einbindung in die openmtbmaps? Bei den Höhendaten von Spanien ist nichts dabei (ist wahrscheinlich ja auch nur “geografisch Spanien”). Ich habe zwar bei http://www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/ schon die Rohdaten für die Kanaren gefunden aber leider schaffe ich es bis zu meinem Urlaub (in einer Woche) nicht mir das Wissen zur “Umwandlung” anzueignen.

    Hallo,
    als erstes möchte ich ein Lob für das supercoole Projekt loswerden. Mit den Openmtbmaps macht Fahrradfahren noch mehr Spaß… ;-)

    Ich bin gerade beim “Feintuning” meiner in Mapsource eingebundenen Karten. Leider bekomme ich die empfohlene Installations-Bat “create_mapsource_installationfiles_with_mkgmap.bat” auf meinem Vista Rechner nicht zum laufen. Auf einem alten XP Rechner klappt es. Das ist aber zu langsam und umständlich.
    Ich bin alles schon mehrmals durchgegangen und kann den Fehler nicht finden. Beim x-ten Durchlauf ist mir die Meldung in der Bat-Datei aufgefallen: “… drop me a comment…” die Bedingung passt auch noch, also hoffe ich, dass mein Kommentar hier richtig ist.
    Zur Verdeutlichung habe ich hier noch einen Screenshot:

    mkgmap.jar ist natürlich im Ordner vorhanden (wenn nicht kommt ja eine andere Meldung).

      Keine Ahnung, hast evtl eine x86 Java Installation auf x64 Rechner? Auf jeden Fall funktioniert dein Java nicht.

      Wenn du ein x64 (64 bit) Windows 7 hast:
      create_mapsource_installationfiles_with_mkgmap.bat mit einem Texteditor öffnen, danach suchen&ersetzen wählen und folgenes suchen&ersetzen lassen:
      Suchen ” java -” soll bedeuten LEERZEICHEN java LEERZEICHEN -
      ersetzen: ” C:\Windows\SysWOW64\java -” LEERZEICHEN C:\…\java\ LEERZEICHEN -”
      Danach passt es.

      @admin: Hut ab vor Deinen MTB Karten, ist ein super Projekt was Du hier auf die Beine gestellt hast

        Obiges ist aber falsch. Weil so wird das 32bit Java angesprochen. Es macht aber Sinn, das x64 bit Java zu verwenden….

          Hallo,
          danke für die Tipps. Der Tipp “relativer Pfad zu absoluter Pfad” hat mich zum Nachdenken und weiteren Probieren gebracht.
          Ein Verzeichnis SysWOW64 gibt es nicht, es ist ein 32Bit Vista System. Die genaue Lösung kenne ich nicht, aber es funktioniert, seit dem ich java 1.4 (alte Version) zusätzlich zur ohnehin schon vorhandenen 1.6 Version installiert habe…

    Ich kann beide Probleme des XXLbiker´s bestätigen:
    In Mapsource 6.16.1 sind die Höhenlienien nur zum Teil vorhanden (mit den alten *.bat Installationsfiles und srtm*.typ vom 16.04.10 ist die Darstellung ok)

    Weiterhin gibt es auch Probleme mit dem Routing auf verschiedenen Karten wenn die SRTM installiert sind, ohne SRTM gibt es keine Fehler.

    Bei Bedarf kann ich gern eine E-Mail mit den “Problemrouten” senden.

    Hi,
    contourlines overlay is still invisible in Mapsource 6.16.1.
    All I can see are the altitude numbers but no lines.
    Created Alps Map using create_mapsource_installationfiles_with_mkgmap with Classic TYPfile from last package(selection 0).
    In the Beta I could at least see countourlines sometimes at some zoom levels.
    Is this still a glitch with Mapsource or is there something wrong with your package?
    Contourlines show up on Basecamp 3.0.3., however routing produces an error message rendering BC unusable. Also I prefer the matter of fact look and feel of MS.

      Hi again,
      could it be that MS 6.16.1 as well as Basecamp 3.0.3. have a routing problem with openmtbmap in general? Almost every time, I try to route via a path, MS/BC shows an error message.
      The latest MS Beta works fine, MS version 6.15.7 works fine too.
      I created a mapset using one of your older style files from mid-March 2010, this also works fine.
      The error seems to be in the combination of your new style with the newest Garmin BC/MS releases.
      Maybe this helps… or am I the only one experiencing this problem?

        could be. What I noticed is that maps that have contourlines integrated, perform much worse in the new Basecamp/Mapsource. If you can cross this out, then you could send me the routes that 6.16.1 can’t calculate but the beta can as gdb via e-mail and I can have a look at it. The shorter the route the better.

    Yes available, but does not work like the beta version I had got hold off. Has some improvements, but no major ones over 6.16.03. Basecamp 3.03 is available however, and is really cool. You can switch lines on/off (and it works correctly with openmtbmap!!!). Working so foar (rivers, contourlines). Of course if you have to disable other and higways to switch of viewing highways.
