Programs to Display the Openmtbmap
For anyone on the good side of earth Openmtbmap.org maps are now shown correctly in Qlandkarte_GT version 0.17 or higher – QLandkarte_GT is compatible with all big OS (Linux, MacOSx and well Windows too). Linux users can alternatively install Mapsource 6.13.6 in WINE.
Mapsource – I currenlty recommend to use 6.16.x (once it will be available). Mapsource versions 6.14 to 6.15.6 are complete junk, if you use it, please update.
Mac OSx users please use Qlandkarte GT or convert maps and use Basecamp 3 or Roadtrip: convert-maps-for-mac-os-x-roadtrip/

I recommend to allways send maps to an external data card and not internamal memory. (this way if something goes wrong, or maps would be damaged you run less danger of wrecking your GPS).
Alternative: Use create_gmapsupp.img.bat and place the newly created gmapsupp.img into /garmin folder on your GPS. Address search cannot be included this way.

Current Issues
- If sending maps to GPS with Mapsource fails, run unregister_or_reregister_address_search.bat to unregister the address search index from Mapsource.
- Note that currently searching for streets in Cities with a UMLAUT (ö, Ä, Ü…) in their name will not work (bug in mkgmap). Therefore I don't include Umlauts.
The address search does not yet work as good on the GPS as in Mapsource. This will hopefully sometimes in future be corrected. It also does not work inside Basecamp.
- General: Autorouting over longer distances on GPS works only with Via Points. Solve with WinGDB: plan-routes-efficiently
- Autorouting needs attributes like tracktype, bicycle routes, mtb:scale, sac_scale, mtb routes and others to work well. So keep care to enter those details into OSM. (not all are needed, but enough for me to guesstimate wheter a street is cyclefriendly/mtbriendly or not).
- Non Connected ways and overlapping ways without node, this is the main problem and a problem of the underlaying map data – please check here: http://keepright.ipax.at/report_map.php
Only check/enable: "allmost Junctions" , "intersections without junctions" as well as "overlapping ways". This helps you to quickly spot the erros. You can then follow the link to Potlatch (or also JOSM is integrated for JOSM users) and quickly correct mistakes!
Watch out not to connect ways that are not connected in reality (i.e. a way crosses another on a brigde, here no connecting node is the right solution).
- If you use Windows 2000 you need to install the "reg" command : Reg cmd at Microsoft. Batches are incompatible to earlier Windows versions.
- Note overflowing sea is not an issue, but currently not differently possible. Any comments about it, will be deleted.

Contourlines
Please note, at the boundaries there might be some artefacts. I cannot change this currently. The interval of the contourlines is 20m. Note DEM creation is not yet possible. Where Available I have used DEM data from viewfinderpanoramas.org. This data is of much higher quality than other DEM sources, however I cannot publish this data under CCBYSA 2.0 – therefore the copyright of the contourline data remains with viewfinderpanoramas.org and I cannot include this data into the normal map downloads. On Basecamp 3 contourlines will be visible as on GPS and not disappear. You have to create the installationfiles by using create_mapsource_installationfiles_with_mkgmap.bat (which requires you to install Java JRE 6, and download mkgmap). Alternatively you can also use create_mapsource_installationfiles.bat (requires installation of cgpsmapper as maptk is not possible anymore) – but it has some drawbacks.
Contourlines updated on 27.05.2010 to solve eventual autorouting problems when integrated with openmtbmaps.

.TYP-Files – influence Layout and Contrast
Current .TYP files are named clas* thin* and wide*. If you still have mtb* or white* in your folders delete them. They will not work correctly with new maps anymore. To change between them, simply doubleclick and run the different installation .bat with admin rights.
You can change typfiles, and therefore the map colours, to your liking with http://ati.land.cz/gps/typdecomp/editor.cgi or by using http://www.maptk.dnsalias.com/

vorweg auch ein Dank für die hervorragenden Ressourcen und Batchfiles. Ich habe aktuell das Problem, dass in Mapsource die Höhenlinien von den Grünflächen (Wald) überdeckt werden.
Die Daten: Kartensatz Alpen vom 22.01.10, mit Höhendaten european Alps von 24.09.09, ich habe die Batchfiles aus dem Kartensatz verwendet und die srtmalp.typ. Wie gesagt am GPS (Garmin 60csx) mit dem Thin.TYP klappt die Anzeige perfekt auf Mapsource sind die Höhenlinien zwar überall vorhanden, aber bei Waldgebieten überdeckt.
Sollte jemand eine Lösung dazu haben, wäre das für`s Tourenplanen super,

Hallo Dominik,
für die Sache mit den Höhenlinien gibt´s eine Lösung. Hat Felix auch in dem readme zu den Höhenlinien beschreiben: Man kompiliert die Höhenlinien einfach mit dem aktuellen mkgmap-snapshot neu. Dann werden sie mit jedem der drei Typfiles in mapsource angezeigt.
Ich hab´s so gemacht:
- Höhenlinien von openmtbmap.org runterladen
- die freie Version von GPSmapedit runterladen und installieren
- die Höhenlinien-img´s mit GPSmapedit öffnen und als .mp (polish format) abspeichern. Dazu habe ich mir ein Verzeichnis “MP” angelegt und alle .mp-files dort abgespeichert.
- den aktuellen mkgmap-snapshot von http://www.mkgmap.org.uk/snapshots/ runterladen und in das Verzeichnis “MP” entpacken
- wenn du es noch nicht hast, Java JDK installieren, das mkgmap läuft nur mit Java JDK, nicht mit Java JRE
- jetzt noch eine batch-Datei in das Verzeichnis “MP” packen, die ungefähr so aussehen könnte:

- wenn du jetzt die batch-Datei startest, dann schreibt dir mkgmap schöne neue .img-files in dein Verzeichnis “MP”
- alle .img-files selektierst du nun und schiebst sie in das Verzeichnis der Kartendaten
- jetzt kannst du create_mapsource_installationfiles.bat laufen lassen und dabei ein beliebiges Typfile auswählen
- mit install_openmtbmap_alps_srtm_tt.mm.jjjj.bat in mapsource einbinden und schon sind die Höhenlinien zu sehen!
Probier´s mal aus, es klappt! Ich hab´s auch geschafft, und ich würde mich nicht gerade als Computerfachmann bezeichnen…

Noch eine kleine Egänzung zum besseren Verständnis:
der Trick scheint zu sein, dass die Höhenlinien und die Kartendaten mit der gleichen Version von mkgmap kompiliert werden.
Wenn Felix die neuen updates also z.B. am 22.1. einstellt, dann auch den mkgmap-snapshot vom 22.jan nehmen oder eben den letzten snapshot vor dem 22.1. Also immer die Version, die Felix vermutlich auch für die Kartendaten verwendet hat.
In der batch-Datei bestimmt -Xmx3000M, wieviel RAM dem mkgmap zugewiesen werden. Das musst du ev. deinem eigenen Arbeitsspeicher anpassen.
Und ganz am Anfang nicht wundern, die Höhenlinien als .mp sind sehr viel größer als vorher als .img…

Nein siehe readme. Es gehlt leider nicht um die Version. Sondern es funktioniert einfach mit bis zu rund 28 Tage neueren Karten. Danach ist aus. Alternative abgesehen von neukompilieren ist QlandkarteGT – da sind wie am GPS die Hoehenlinien immer sichtbar. Leider weiß ich nicht woran es genau liegt, sonst koennte Popej es in gmaptool einbauen und man koennte einfach mit gmaptool/gmt das Kompilierdatum erneuern – “refresh headers” reicht jedoch nicht aus.

mir fällt dazu folgendes ein:
- löschen der alten Kartenversion mit dem “uninstall.bat” aus dieser alten Version
- Kontrolle in MS (nach Neustart), ob alte Karte weg ist
- dann alle Dateien, die zu der alten Hessenkarte gehörten löschen
- neue Hessenkarte mit 7-Zip entpacken
- BAT-Datei “install_with_classic_typfile.bat” ausführen
So hat es bei mir mit der NRW-Karte immer problemlos funktioniert.

Ja, weil die Uebersichtskarte nicht mehr funktioniert, und auch ein paar GPS Probleme hatten sie anzuzeigen. Irgendwie geht ganz Asien als Karte nicht so einfach.

wenn openmtbmap – hessen.7z.zip installiere bei MS install_with_classic
bekomme ich eine Fehlermeldung und MS lässt sich nicht mehr öffnen.
Ich weiß keinen Rat mehr.

zum bearbeiten von OSM-Karten ist der Bildaufbau zZ schrecklich langsam.
Kann ich da irgendwas beeinflussen damit es schneller geht oder überprüfen warum es so langsam ist?
Die Datenrate download ist ca. 2 MBit/s. Ich habe aber den Eindruck, dass wohl eher mein PC die Bremse ist.

habe als absoluter Neuling es nun auch endlich geschafft eine openMTBmap-Karte zu installieren (mittels administrator und *.bat-datei)!
Leider kann ich die Karte nicht auf dem bekannten Weg löschen! Ich öffne mit Rechtsklick die uninstall.bat datei…wieder über adminisrtator und dann kommt die Fehlermeldung FEHLER: Der angegebene Registrierungsschlüssel bzw. Wert wurde nicht gefunden.
Ich kann leider die Karte nicht von Mapsource löschen.
Kann mir jemand einen coolen und oder heissen Tipp geben???

Es ist eine starke Motivation Ergänzungen in die Karten einzubringen, weil man unmittelbar danach bereits das Ergebnis erkennen kann.

Hab gerade die aktuelle Bayernkarte vom 15.1. runtergeladen und installiert, und sehe dass es immer noch an den Umlauten und den Apostrophen happert. Weder bei Mapsource noch auf dem GPS werden die angezeigt. Bin ich der einzige, bei dem das so ist?

First and foremost: Respect, admiration and a little jealosy for you effort.
I did as you told me. I read the tutorials before downloading
NordRheinWestfalen and Rheinland-Pfalz. It worked exactly as you said and I am extremely gratefull.
So I went on to my next project:
Mapping in Portugal next month (i.e. Feb.2010)
Of course I did not need to read any tutorials now as I understand how it is done but it did not work.
A different proceedure (download od maptk) is required for Portugal. So download it I did, but now I was required to define a FID. As I have no idea what a FID is I questioned Google: To no avail, I am afraid. The instructions then said that I should download mapsettoolkit to help locate not yet defined FIDs. However the tutorials say that mapsettoolkit is not recommended so I broke off the download to find a workaround.
What I don’t understand is that as the inputdatafile (i.e. OpenStreetMap) and the output goes to MapSource why does the
install*.bat proceedure for Portugal have to be different than for NordRheinWestfalen and Rheinland-Pfalz.
Unfortunately I do not have the know-how to change the install*.bat proceedure for Portugal to give it a try.
Has anybody got any ideas.
Note: I have not yet tried to load the map(s) to my Garmin 60CSx but I will try once I have the Portugal osmMTBMap on MapSource.

Hi,
it looks like you downloaded the srtm file (countourlines) for Portugal instead of the regular Portugal Map file. The correct file to download can be found here:
http://openmtbmap.x-nation.de/maps/mtbportugal.7z.zip
It works just like all the other map files, eg. by running the batch file install_with_classic_typfile.bat (or one of the other ones for the thin or wide type file)

P.S. installing the contourlines file is a totally different and more complex chapter and needs more explanation which can be found in the file about the contourline installation.txt contained in the map zip file mentioned above.
I am a Mac user. So I nor have 7Zip neither WinRar. What is the reason that the maps are not provided in an archive, that can be expanded also on a Mac platform?
lzma (7zip) compresses 7-8% better than any other algorythm. 7zip is Opensource and should also be available for MacOsx.

Kann mir vielleicht jemand aus der Patsche helfen?
Habe mir heute völlig problemlos die D-Karte von http://www.mtbnavi.de/ auf MapSource geholt. Kinderleicht, 1 oder 2 Mouseklicks, und es hat alles wunderbar funktioniert.
Nun wollte ich von hier noch die BW-Karte dazu herunterladen. Hätte ja sein können, daß da irgendwelche Hidden-Trails drauf sind, dies auf der D-Karte noch nicht gibt.
Nun geht überhaupt nichts mehr.
Beim Aufrufen von MapSource bekomme ich die Fehlermeldung:
“Bei der Installation von MapSource ist ein Fehler aufgetreten.
Installieren und Starten sie MapSource erneut.”
Trotz Deinstallieren und wieder Neuinstallieren bekomme ich nur diese Fehlermeldung.
MapSource lässt sich nicht mehr starten.
Was ist nun zu tun?
Wäre nett, wenn sich jemand die Zeit nimmt.
Download Garmin’s TrainingCenter, installiere dieses, danach kannst du die downloadbaren Updates von MapSource “auf der grünen Wiese” installieren, auch wenn du kein Original auf CD hast. Du kannst dann direkt z.B. die aktuellste Version installieren.
Hallo macadam, kann es sein dass du die BW-Karte nur einzippt hast? Da sind nämlich noch einige .bat-Dateien in der zip-Datei, damit muss du die Karte für Mapsource noch installieren, z.b. mit install_with_classic_typfile.bat.
Die Fehlermeldung von Mapsource hört sich nämlich danach an.

lade mapsettoolkit (von cyperman) und lösche auf der rechten Seite die Einträge für openmtbmap(, zumindest einen der beiden).
Ich nehme an die Karten haben die gleichen map-id´s, sonst würde Mapsource nicht streiken? Deutschland enthält BW, da reicht eine der beiden Karten.

Mein persönlicher Tipp:
1. Öffne http://www.path.cz/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=22
2. Download Garmin_MapSource_FIX_0.2e.rar
3. RAR-Datei öffnen oder entpacken und “MapSourceFix.exe” ausführen, Sprache auswählen und “Prüfung” klicken.
Den Lösungsanatz von Martin habe ich als erstes versucht.
Schritte 1-3 wie empfohlen.
Die Anwendung meldet nun:

Nun habe ich mich erstmal gewundert.
Im Startmenü war MapSource noch da. Naja, gestern habe ich es aufgrund der Fehlermeldung ja 2-3mal dinstalliert und wieder neu installiert.
Das gleiche habe ich jetzt auch nochmal wiederholt.
Trotzdem bleibt “MapSourceFix.exe” dabei, daß MapSource nicht da ist.
Danke erstmal daß Ihr Euch meiner erbarmt habt.
Werde nun mal die anderen Empfehlungen angehen.
Ich hatte mal ein ähnliches Problem, bei dem ich mapsource nicht mehr starten konnte. Ich konnte das Problem lösen, indem ich in der registry unter HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Garmin\Mapsource\Families den Eintrag der Karte gelöscht habe, die die Probleme verursacht hatte.

Frage: Wie krieg ich eine Karte inkl. Höhenlinien in Mapsource angezeigt? Ich kann entweder nur die Karte ohne Höhenlinien oder die Höhenlinien aufrufen.

im Readme Ueber die SRTM Konturlinien Installation.txt des KARTEN Pakets (z.B. mtbalps.7z.zip) steht drin wie es gemacht wird.
Die Batch Dateien des SRTM Pakets funktionieren nicht, deshalb die entsprechenden Batches des Kartenpakets verwenden.
1. create_mapsource_installationfiles.bat ausführen
2. dann die damit erzeugte Batch Datei der Art install_openmtbmap_alpG_srtm_03.01.2010.bat (Name ändert sich je nach den vorher vergebenen Parametern)
Es gibt noch ein paar andere Voraussetzungen die aber alle im Readme beschrieben sind.

Hallo Felix, nur zur Info: Bei den Map´s von Bayern (bei den anderen weiß ich es nicht) vom 7.12. sind die Umlaute und Apostrophen verschwunden. Statt dem Apostroph steht ein ?

Ich nutze schon länger OpenStreetMap für die Navigation mit dem Rad und bin vor kurzem auf OpenMTB gestoßen.
Auch wenn ich selbst kein Mountainbiker bin, bin ich doch sehr begeistert, da man anhand dieser Karte wirklich einen Eindruck bekommt, ob ein Weg noch so halbwegs passierbar ist oder nicht.
