Maps are available Worldwide. They are usually updated every Friday.

All maptiles are compiled with mkgmap using map data from openstreetmap.org & Contributors. You can use and edit the map data by visiting openstreetmap.org.

Thanks to Geofabrik for providing the map data snapshots which I use to create the maps.

Programs to Display the Mac OSX Openmtbmap

Please use the latest Garmin Mac OSX Basecamp Version. Maps are not compatible with Basecamp v2 or older (as well with other old Garmin Mac OSx programs (e.g. Roadtrip)).

Send Maps to GPS with Basecamp/Mapinstall: tutorials/send-maps-to-your-gps/mapsource/ I recommend to always send maps to an external data card and not internal memory. (this way if something goes wrong, or maps would be damaged you run less danger of wrecking your GPS).

Current Issues

The address search is not working consistently. Most problems are due to inconsistent data structures in OSM address data.

- General: Autorouting over longer distances on GPS works only with Via Points.  plan-routes-efficiently

- Autorouting needs attributes like tracktype, bicycle routes, mtb:scale, sac_scale, mtb routes and others to work well. So keep care to enter those details into OSM. (not all are needed, but enough for me to guesstimate wheter a street is cyclefriendly/mtbriendly or not).

- Non Connected ways and overlapping ways without node, this is the main problem and a problem of the underlaying map data – please check here: http://keepright.ipax.at/report_map.php Only check/enable: "almost Junctions" , "intersections without junctions" as well as "overlapping ways". This helps you to quickly spot the erros. You can then follow the link to Potlatch (or also JOSM is integrated for JOSM users) and quickly correct mistakes! Watch out not to connect ways that are not connected in reality (i.e. a way crosses another on a brigde, here no connecting node is the right solution). – If you use Windows 2000 you may need to install the "reg" command : Reg cmd at Microsoft. Batches are incompatible to earlier Windows versions. – Note sometimes sea is missing. This is not an issue, but currently not differently possible. It is usually a problem in OSM data.

Notice on Updating Maps

If you want to be notified by email on map updates please go to the frontpage and enter your email address in the subscribe field of the left sidebar. You only get an e-mail when there are changes besides a simple map data update. Map updates are usually every Thursday night / Friday morning. You can look at the server to see the date of map upload. To update the maps, simply overwrite the old data or use Mapinstall.

Overlapping maps in border regions

While you can join maps of different countries, routing over the boundary is a bit shaky, and you will have one map overlaying the other with white background. As long as mkgmap cannot create randomly shaped overview maps (currently only rectangles), this problem is not solvable. There is however the possibility to download a Europe map, which will be updated every 4-6 weeks.

 

Velomap and Openmtbmap of the same Country — Problems

If you install an openmtbmap and a VeloMap of the same country with contourlines as separate download (and Spain as well as Canary Islands), you should only send the contourlines once (meaning with either Openmtmbap or Velomap of the country). Else you GPS might not show the maps, or worse not even start until maps are deleted. There are several possibilities.

a) Install both maps without contourlines and contourlines separately (install separate contourlines only map option in installer). You have not trouble.

b) be careful here: Select the map as usual in Basecamp/Mapinstall, then go to the list of the selected tiles ready to be sent to the GPS, scroll down to the bottom, and unselect the contourlines only tiles from the list.

– This is not a problem with countries where contourlines are fully integrated like Germany, Alps, Austria,……

 

 

 

Openmtbmap/Velomap maps Premium Download in Mac OSx format (gmap)

Upon several requests, I have decided to make available all openmtbmaps and velomaps  available for download in Mac OSx gmap format for Basecamp. This saves you the hassle of converting them. All countries will however only be available for download for openmtbmap members. Austria is available as a download to everyone, so you can try it out.

If you want to get the Velomap Mac gmap format Mac OSX maps, get them here not on Velomap – simply scroll down – the links are after the openmtbmap downloads.

Instructions:

Installation is in principle easy. Unpack with Unarchiver – then install with doubleclick. However here are the detailed Instuctions for Installation and Newbies. It also explains how to change the map layout – which is a must before sending them to your GPS:

Contourlines Downloads

Most countries, especially the popular ones, have the contourlines already integrated. However for several countries the contourlines are rather large (rule of thumb if contourlines have more data than the maps) and I integrate them, but you need to download them separately (once).

In general it is fine to only update the map, as I try to change the contourlines as seldom as possible.

Feedback

Please comment if you like theese maps or even better tell other people about them (forums, blog about it, twitter, etc…) In case maps break Basecamp or don't work – please write exactly which downloads don't work and the time of download as well as your OS and Mapsource version.. And don't forget if you have problems unpacking the maps – .7z is a container, the actual compression I use is the very modern lzma2, most .7z archives however use the older lzma compression, therefore make your you use the latest Unarchiver or another program that can unpack lzma2!

    Hallo, ich hab ein ganz gefinkeltes Problem: Ich habe die mtb-karten im Finder (mac) gelöscht. Wenn ich mit dem MapInstaller nun wieder Karten hinzufügen möchte, zeigt dieser dass kein Speicherplatz mehr frei ist…

    Irgendeine Idee wie ich wieder mtb-Karten auf den Garmin bekomme?

    nochmal danke für Deine grossartige Arbeit!

    Habe ein Problem mit Download von Asien-Kontinent unter http://openmtbmap.org/?s2member_file_download=odbl/mtbasia_macosx.7z. Die Datei ist nur 700 KB gross, da muss was falsch sein, oder?

      Nein, du musst nur Analog zur Europakarte noch zusätzlich die Kartendaten runterladen. Es ist so klein, da die Asienkarte wegen unzähligen Datenproblemen, keine Addresssuche beinhaltet.

    Sind die Höhenkonturlinien bei der MTB-Kroatienkarte (08.03.2012) wirklich drin?
    Bei mir geht die Anzeige der Höhenkonturlinien (nur bei dieser MTB-Kroatienkarte) nicht.

      Ja, hast du evtl die Karte mit einfachem Klick, statt klicken – halten ziehen auswgewählt vorm dem senden ans GPS – dann werden die Höhenlinien nicht mitübertragen. Oder kannst du sie in Basecamp nicht sehen?

          Dann kann ich dir nur empfehlen, die Karte zu löschen, und neu zu installieren. Hab es gerade ausprobiert (19.4.2013)- und es geht problemlos. Warum überhaupt 2012??? Ich dneke mal das war ein Typo, oder?
          Weil 3.2012 gab es noch gar keine mtbcroatia im gmap Format von mir zum Download (oder du hast sie damals selber konvertiert und noch irgendwo installiert – dann hat sie Vorrang – sprich suche nach der alten Karte und lösche sie).

    Hi Felix,

    vielen, vielen Dank für die tolle Arbeit, die Du weiterhin hier machst. Das wird immer besser! Ich hoffe, dass ich hier auch jetzt etwas helfen kann.

    Ich habe gerade einen Fehler in den Mac Karten entdeckt (denke ich). Nach dem Entpacken mit Unarchiver und dem Installieren mit MapManager erschienen weder mtbalps noch mtbireland in Basecamp. Sie erschienen auch nicht in der MapManager Liste der installierten Karten, obwohl bei der eigentlichen Installation, MapManager Erfolg gemeldet hatte. Nach viel Herumprobieren kam ich darauf, die Inhalte mit “Show Package Contents” anzuschauen, und sehe da, der Inhalt von “mtbireland.gmap” war “mtbireland.gmap”, da habe ich dann “Show Package Contents” auf den zweiten “mtbireland.gmap” angewendet, und erst dann kamen die erwarteten echten Inhalte. Ich habe dann den zweiten “”mtbireland.gmap” herauskopiert, das Original gelöscht und das Herauskopierte in den /Users/user-name/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Maps hineinkopiert. Ich habe das bei mtbalps dann wiederholt und Jetzt funktioniert alles. Weitere Karten habe ich nicht getestet.

      Dann hast du beim entpacken, in einen Unterordner entpackt. Das sollte eigentlich gefragt werden. Immer direkt / also nicht in ein Unterverzeichnis entpacken (oder halt auf keinen Fall in eines, dass du dann .gmap nennst, dann wird es sofort als Package erkannt – und das kann man IMHO nicht mehr durch nochmaliges umbenennen rückgängig machen (halt außer Show Packacke und dan rauskopieren).

      Ist die Vorgehensweise hier nicht deutlich genug: http://openmtbmap.org/de/tutorials/install-maps-mac-osx/ ??

        Die Anleitung ist wirklich sehr gut aber leider steht nicht drin, dass der Unarchiver in denselben Ordner wie die .7z-Datei entpacken soll. Ich hatte tatsächlich eingestellt, dass er in einen Unterordner entpacken sollte. Das habe ich jetzt geändert und es funktioniert ohne zusätzlichen Layer.

        Natürlich hätte ich schnallen müssen, dass er nicht in einen Unterordner entpackt hatte, da die “falsche” .gmap Datei ja direkt in dem Originalverzeichniss lag, allerding wusste ich nicht, dass ein Ordner mit Suffix als Package dargestellt wird. Also wieder was gelernt;-)

        Vielleicht wäre es gut, auch diesen Punkt (und mögliche Fehlerquelle) in die Anleitung aufzunehmen. Ein Image der richtigen Einstellung habe ich drangehängt.

          okay, werd es noch ergänzen. Die Standardeinstellung von The Unarchiver ist bei Doppelklick entpacken in selben Ordner, und nicht Unterordner. Ich hab das Tutorial erstellt auf ganz frisch installiertem MAC OSx…

    ich bin nun bei einigen glücklosen versuchen mir die Europakarte auf den Rechner zu ziehen.
    Dafür brauche ich wohl diesen Link

    ” Openmtbmap – Europe Mapfiles.”

    Dort finde ich aber nur eine “Hieroglyphen”Seite.

    Kann ich darauf verzichten?

    Problem mit .gmap: ich kann in Garmin Base Camo diese Karten mit extension .gmap nicht importieren. Sie bekomme ich sie jetzt auf mein Nüvi geladen?

    Hallo zusammen

    Ich habe die Karten installiert .(europe)
    In Basecamp kommt aber nichts.
    Wo muß ich denn die Kartendaten runter laden?
    Bei dem Link kommt nur ein wildes Fenster mit vielen Bustaben und Zahlen bei mir an.
    Aber nichts in den Downloud Ordner mit 7z?
    Mache ich was falsch.
    Und wie kommen die Höhenlinien in den Ordner?
    Eine Anleitung wäre für mich (Dummi) nicht schlecht.

    Guten Abend.

    Disclaimer – voelliger Anfaenger was GPS Geraete betrifft.

    Ich hab mir die US Karte fuer MacOS mtbus-west.gmap heruntergeladen, entpackt und alles prima. Laesst sich in Garmin Base Camp prima bearbeiten – Dankeschoen.

    Mein Problem – ich bekomm das Ding nicht auf mein GPS.
    Versucht
    a) ueber GarmiMapManager – erkennt die Karte, sendet aber im Transfer Prozess eine Fehlermeldung: “Bei der Installation von openmtbmap_us-west_21.12.2012
    ist ein Problem aufgetreten.Installieren Sie das Produkt erneut und versuchen Sie es noch einmal.” Was ich schon drei Mal versucht hab (speicherplatz auf Micro SIM Karte ist genug)
    b) direkt auf Speicherkarte in \Garmin kopiert – geht einfach, aber das GPS Geraet erkennt die Karte nicht…
    c) Blind Kontrolle mit anderer Karte (MTB Spanien) – das funktioniert problemlos

    Wo mache ich den Fehler ?

    GPS is ein GarminGPS map62st

        Intensives Lesen hat Vorteile – danke…..
        ..aaaaber ich brauch noch mal eine kleine Hilfe

        1) aus Deiner Anleitung:
        move into folder: /Users/PUTYOURUSERNAMEHERE/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Maps/openmtbmap_COUNTRY/Product1/

        im /maps Verzeichnis finde ich die mtbus-west.gmap Datei.

        Mir ist nicht klar wie ich die subfolder benennen muss.
        1a) Ich gehe davon aus dass aus dem Pfad oben openmtbmap_COUNTRY sich uebersetzt in meinem Fall in openbtmap_USWest – korrekt?
        1b) in was muss ich Product1 uebersetzten.

        Kleine Anmerkung – fuer Anfaenger wie mich waere ein Beispiel in Deiner Anleitung hilfreich J

        2) In Deiner Anleitung zum Aendern des Karten Layouts fuehrst Du den folgenden Pfad als Beispiel auf:
        /Users/PUTYOURUSERNAMEHERE/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Maps/mtbgermany.gmap/Layout_Files
        Pfad hab ich gefunden bis zum /Maps Verzeichnis. Darin sind die verschiedenen*.gmap Dateien.
        Hier bin ich haengengeblieben da mtbgermany.gmap eine Datei ist und kein Verzeichnis … mache ich einen Denkfehler ?
        Wo finde ich die naechste Ebene drunter /layout_files zum kopieren der von dir erklaerten Datei Typfile.typ

          Das Problem ist Finder. Du musst versteckte und Systemdateien, anzeigen lassen. Oder benutze: MuCommander oder Xtra Finder stattdessen. Der Ordner existiert – nur kannst du ihn derzeit nicht sehen.
          1a) ist korrekt. Product1 bleibt Product1 – siehe oben. .gmap ist ein Verzeichnis keine Datei sondern ein Ordner/Package, nur Finder baut Schrott.

    Hi,
    Erstmal Freude, dass es für MAC diese Seite hier gibt. Alles andere wird schon schwer. Danke.
    Deutschland installiert- funzt. Super.
    EU und Conturen entpackts mir und dann? EU installiert sich wie D, auch anwählbar aber Karte unter Basecamp ist nur gelb/leer.
    Ich finde allerdings auch nicht den genannten Order wo ich das entpackte hinkopieren soll. Unter ApplicationSupport ist kein Garmin zu finden.
    Vielleicht kannst Du mir noch einen Klapps geben…. :)

      Dort müssen nach entpacken dann viele Ordner die mit 6 und mit 7 beginnen drinnliegen.
