I render the maps about once weekly (usually starting on Thursday evening). The data I use is usually about 24 hours old. So upload your data at the latest on wednesday evening (CET) to have it included in Thursday night updates.
Can you offer combined maps, e.g. Italy/Switzerland/Austria/Germany ?
Yes if you donate there is a full map of Europe for download.
Country / Area X is not yet offered.
By now I have worldwide maps. Some maps are for people who donate only (North America & full map of Europe).
How should I update my Maps?
The most secure way is to run a new .exe (and make sure Mapsource/Basecamp are not running)

Usually this should not happen. There are several ways to solve this.
1. click on uninstall.bat ("run as administrator" or it won't work). If it has been the map you just installed and it still not works then another map is responsible but not one you downloaded from openmtbmap.org. To solve it see 2.
2. Install Mapsettoolkit cypherman1.googlepages.com/home and delete any map you suspect maybe breaking Mapsource. To help you finding maps installed incorrectly click on "Check Registry". You can use mapsettolkit to reintall any map that didn't break Mapsource via the "Install" button to the right of "Check Registry".

Note As of Mapsource 6.16.3 stability has improved a lot and 6.16.3 is pretty hard to crash.

In that case I will need your OS, Mapsource Version, and which map it has been including the date of download. Well did you read through the tutorial? You can send maps directly to an external card reader, then it will be much faster than to your GPS connected via USB. Once exportet as gmapsupp.img, you can combine several gmapsupp.img with gmaptool. Read gmaptool documentation on how to do that. It's not trivial for beginners….
Autorouting does not work well on my GPS / Different to Mapsource
Have you read through About–> Autorouting? Try setting the same settings (start with Car/Motorcycle and enable/disable "avoid toll roads", and use "faster route"). The main difference is that Mapsource can calculate longer routes without inbetween points and calculates faster. The only unit currently having more or less it's own mind is the Garmin Edge series, which also has no "avoid toll roads" option to set to deactivate routing over non "trekking bike suitable" ways.
etrex x0 is a special case.
Mapsource or my GPS (PNA) crashes on calculating a route, or does not react anymore
Autorouting is very complex. This is a well known problem for which there is no solution (yet). Both Mapsource and the GPS units are quite limited in calculation power.
Try to route over shorter distances. The better the OSM Coverage is in your area, the more likely a long route will be calculated. The bicycle mode further makes route calculation over longer distances even worse as it excludes many roads from routing.
Commercial Maps like City Navigator or OSM maps made for car use work better because they use highway=motorway and highway=trunk for long distances and thereby reduce the number of times you have to turn. There is a maximum limit of 100 turns to reach your destination without putting inbetween nodes – but likely with openmtbmap the limit is more 10-40 turns depending on how well the area is mapped.
Note that the GPS may well need 1-2 minutes for longer calculations (and don't trust the progress bar, it's broken on many units, so just because it arrived on the end does not mean that the route cannot be calculated). The openmtbmap is not intended to autoroute you from city to city but autoroute you over nice trails on rather short distances. My goal is that routing works in well mapped areas on air distance of around 40-50km without breaking down.
I will try to further optimize to reach this. Currently if an area is well mapped it is rather 10-30km.
Also note the biggest problem we face. Many roads are not connected in OSM
If a road is not connected the GPS will not route you along. Please correct any unconnected streets you notice. (also connect gondolas or cablecars to streets so they can be used too for routing). .

Please have a look into GPS relevant forums. Good forums in english language can be found on www.groundspeak.com or www.gpspassion.com – in German language www.naviboard.de or www.naviuser.at. Also read through wiki.openstreetmap.org/ and the Openstreetmap forum (has Garmin section): forum.openstreetmap.org/index.php
In 90% of all cases your questions will be answered in the tutorials and/or are explained in the help file of Garmin Mapsource. Mapsource is relatively easy to use, but you will need at least several hours or even days to find out the full potential. Use Qlandkarte GT if your a beginner, it's easier.

Some areas/polygons are not rendered, or incorrectly, "ocean overflowing"
a) Sea is partially missing or overflowing: There is somewhere a bit of the coastline / lakeline broken. Note this can either be a fault in the data, or result because the geofabrik extracts are unluckily cutted – so that mkgmap places the sea on the wrong side.
You can make the sea polygon color (currently 0x10f1d) invisible by making it transparent inside the .TYP-file. Then you will have no more sea at all if it bothers you.
b) Instead of an area there is another area rendered. Please use Multipolygons to solve this. There is no way mkgmap can know what is above or below.
Mapnik and Osmarender have different implementation of Multipolygons and also support unofficial tags like layer=value. There is however no possibility to implement something like layer for Garmin maps. If several Polygons overlap, the definitions in the .TYP-file determine which is shown on top of each other. This has to be done for the whole map. I.e. it is hit and miss whether to show water over forest, or forest over water. So depending on the TYP-File some maps for Garmin will show areas in some places and drop others, and the other way around. BTW also maps sold by Garmin heavily (even much worse) suffer from this problem.

This will happen from time to time. Usually there are some big bugs in the map, that will cause mkgmap, the map compiler to break constructing the tile. Usually those places get fixed up soon, so wait for another update to see whether they are fixed. Otherwise try to find the error yourself, I don't have enough time to analyse such errors. Else address yourself to the mkgmap mailinglist with a explicit bug description (try to use the mkgmap splitter with very low –max-nodes value, to find the offending area)

You can change your Typfile using maptk. Basically anything of the layout can be changed without changing the maps. This is rather advanced however, note that I will not help you on that, but the GPS Forums are full of advice on this.
Make maps compatible with Basecamp on Mac OSx:
Extract the .exe (lzma packed – use e.g. total unarchiver) and feed the output to gmapibuilder (google it). If you have a windows installation you could alternatively install them regulary, and the use the "garmin map converter" to convert the maps into the .gmap format. The garmin map converter can be downloaded at Garmin. Better use Qlandkarte GT instead though (so you don't even need to convert the maps). I will not offer maps in Mac OSx compatible format due to missing resources and Qlandkarte GT being available for Mac OSx as easiest solution.

Nein, zumindest keine vernünftige.
Die Wanderreitkarte (http://www.wanderreitkarte.de/ ) gibt es als PNG-Tiles und als Garmin-IMG. Ich weiß nicht wie er das macht, aber falls jemand nachfragt möchte ich es auch erfahren.
Das sind zwei komplett unterschiedliche Erstellungsmethoden. Die PNG-Tiles sind mit Kosmos wenn ich mich nicht irre erstellt, die Garmin-IMG mit mkgmap. Allerdings mit Closed-Source Preprocessing. Da wirds nachfragen nicht viel bringen, an die kompletten Sources kommst nicht ran.
Keine Strassennamen mit Garmin Mobil XT
Ich benutze mtbgermany mit Garmin Mobile XT auf einem Nokia 5800. Leider werden hier keine Strassennamen angezeigt. Ich benutze Type wide. Mit der gleichen Karte auf meinem Garmin GPSmap 60CSx werden die Strassennamen korrekt angezeigt. Wie ist das verhalten zu erklären ?
Mobile XT hat einfach zig kleine Probleme und wird seit Jahren nicht mehr geupdated.
Aber mit der Originalkarte von Garmin werden Strassennamen angezeigt.
Wie kann ich die Wanderwegmarkierung in den Karten einblenden (wie bei http://www.wanderreitkarte.de)? Ist nur die Frage des TYP-Files oder muss man bei Rendern etwas anders machen? Die Erklärung kann technisch ausfallen. Kann ich eigentlich das TYP-File von der wanderkarte.de in openmtb benutzen?

1. Geht nicht. Würde nur gehen wenn ich den Map Composer zum erstellen benützen würde. Der ist mir aber absolut zu blöd, fehlerhaft und langsam. Mkgmap selber bietet keine Funktion diesbezüglich. Typ-File geht auch nicht, du kannst es aber anpassen mit maptk wie du willst.

mir gefällt das Projekt Openmtbmap sehr gut und möchte für Mountainbiker möglichste detailierte und korrekt Informationen bereitstellen. Trotz intensiver Informationsrecherche finde ich leider zu folgenden Fragen keine wirklich befriedigenden Antworten.
1.) Verwendet man die mtb-Tags für Wege die offiziell für Mountainbiker ausgezeichnet sind oder dann wenn sich diese aus Sicht des Kartografen zum Mountainbiken eignen?
2.) Verwendet man das bicycle=yes Tag, wenn der Weg explizit für Fahrradfahrer frei gegeben wurde oder wenn sich dieser aus Sicht des Kartografen zum Fahrradfahren bzw. Mountainbiken eignet?

Ich möchte MTB Tracks anzeigen und auch am PC erstellen können, wie es mit Basecamp gut funktioniert.

Qlandkarte GT dürfte gehen, oder Mapsource ausprobieren. Generell biete ich keinen Support für Windows 2000 an. Ich weiß auch nicht ob die Installer unter 2000 korrekt funktionieren. Am besten Laptop mit Ubuntu oder anderer Linux Distri Upgraden.

Aber seit neuestem funktioniert in Mapsource die Suche nicht.Erhalte immer die Meldung das die Ausgewählte Strasse in dem Kartenprodukt nicht zulässig ist.

Du darfst alles (ohne Höhenlinien) was CCBYSA 2.0 erlaubt. Also Ja solange du openmtbmap.org als Karte erwähnst, und OSM & Contributors als Datengrundlage.

Mir ist aufgefallen das in den Karten hier, obwohl bei Openstreetmaps richtig angegeben, in DE/Chemnitz der Fluß Chemnitz endet obwohl dieser ja weiter geht. Darstellungsfehler oder doch fehlende Daten hier?

However: Since some updates of the contour lines and maps and with version 6.16.2 of MapSource but also with older versions MapSource crashes when selecting maps with the MapTool. Selection of maps however works when using the maps without contour lines. Maps created with "create_mapsource_installationfiles_with_mkgmap.bat".
Have you tried to unregister and register address search?
unregister_or_reregister_address_search_XXXX.bat

ich habe das neue Garmin 3790T ausprobiert.
Neu ist, daß statt mehrere Karten nicht mehr zusammen als mapset gmapsupp.img im Ordner Garmin liegen, sondern als einzelne .img-Files im Ordner Map. Sehr gute Lösung.
Neu ist aber auch, daß in der Openmtbmap bereite Streifen an einigen Kachelrändern nicht dargestellt werden (obwohl das Autorouting über diese Grenzen funktioniert, die Karte also korrket vorliegt) und das das Gerät nach ein paar mal zoomen immer abstürzt.
Mach ich was falsch oder ist das Gerät ungeeignet für openmtbmap? Im letzteren Fall sollte openmtbmap auf der Homepage vor diesem Gerät warnen. Vielleicht tut sich dann bei Gamin was.
Die Routenplanung mit diesem Gerät ist übrigens absolut unbrauchbar. Die Route wird beim Ergänzen von Zwischenpunkten nicht auf der Karte angezeigt wird. Mit dem POI-Loader geladenen POIS sind nicht anwählbar. Eine Zielsuche auf der Karte in der Nähe eines bekannten Punktes (z.B. über zuletzt gefunden) is nicht möglich. Routen können weder importiert noch exportiert werden.
Da bleibe ich lieber bei meinem alten nüvi 255T. Damit bekomme ich ein Route mit Zwischenpunkten schneller zusammen.

Erstmal vielen Dank für die super Arbeit, ich benutze die Karten schon länger mit vollster Zufriedenheit.
Allerdings habe ich vor einigen Wochen einen kleinen Lapsus entdeckt, der in der aktuellen Version der Maps auch vorhanden ist:
Der südlichste Zipfel Luxemburgs und der entsprechende Nordteil Frankreichs sind auf keiner Karte, ich habe also ein weisses "Loch" auf der Karte. Auf den OSM-Karten ist das Gebiet definitiv verzeichnet. Blöderweise ist gerade dieses Gebiet ein sehr beliebtes und spannendes MTB-Revier wo ich mich aber selbst nicht auskenne, also froh über eine Karte wäre!
Woran liegts? Ist es möglich dieses Gebiet in einer späteren Version abzudecken?

Ich als Navi-Novize habe eine Frage: als ich meine erste Route erstellen wollte, kam ein kleines Problem auf. Bei einigen Straßen, auf denen ich langfahren möchte, werde ich "umgeleitet", weil diese als Einbahnstraße gekennnzeichnet ist. Das ist zum Beispiel auch bei Straßen so, wo man auf dem Bürgersteig in die Gegenrichtung fahren kann. Wie kann ich das einstellen, dass die Route trotzdem durch die Einbahnstraße führt? Das habe ich bei den Einstellungen noch nicht gefunden….

ich habe die Karte “openmtbmap_de_28.05.2010″ geladen und in Garmin MapSource Integriert.
Soweit hat alle funktioniert.
Leider fehlt im Bereich “Bayrische Rhön” eine Karten-Kachel.
die Kachel fehlt übrigends auch bei OpenStreetMap.
Ist der Fehler bekannt ?, gibt es ein Update ?

War ein Fehler in mkgmap, in Verbindung mit Umlauten im Schlüssel (was natürlich falsches Tagging ist, aber halt trotzdem so nicht die Karte crashen dürfte). Wird mit heutigen Updates behoben.
Ich habe die MTB Karten heruntergeladen und benutze MapSource. Funktioniert soweit alles sehr gut!.
Meine Frage: Gib es ein Legende für die Wege? Es gibt versch. Farben, gestrichelte Linien etc. Die Bezeichnung ist halb deutsch halb englisch. Ist ein bisschen unübersichtlich.

Jetzt sitz ich hier, ich armer Tor……und dachte, ich hätte es geschafft.
Von vorne: Radtour geplant, sollte, grenzüberschreitend, von Deutschland nach Holland gehen.
Karten: openmbtmap, Deutschland und NL. Die ganze Prozedur, diese (mit Mapsource) auf dem PC zu installieren, habe ich hinbekommen.
Die Karten sind aus dieser Woche, Mapsource hat die Version 6.15.11
Alle „Kacheln“ (heißt das so?) von DE und NL auf eine 4 GB Scandisk Speicherkarte kopiert. (Mit Mapsource übetragen) War ein Tipp in einem Forum:

Ich habe in das Namensfeld unten als Name eingegeben: Deutschland und Holland komplett, bei Autorouting das Häkchen gesetzt.
Mit Mapsource ein paar Routen erstellt, wunderbare Sache, weil man ja auch (durch Umschalten zwischen Karte DE und NL) grenzüberschreitend routen kann. Las ich in einem Forum – geht auch, zumindest am PC.

Eine weitere, kleine Route (8,6 km, ca. 50 Wegepunkte) habe ich für meine Umgebung erstellt, zum Ausprobieren.
Die Routen habe ich in den Formaten (sicher ist sicher) garmin .gdb3 und auch als *.gpx abgespeichert.
Nun konnte ja nix mehr schiefgehen. Dachte ich.
GPS gekauft, nachdem ich viel gelesen hatte. Das Dakota 20 sollte meinen bescheidenen Ansprüchen genügen. Mache ja keine Mördertouren, kritische Fragen wie Höhenlinien etc. sind am Niederrhein und NL eher zu vernachlässigen.
Das Dakota ist da, Grundeinstellung kein Problem, habe zumindest keines gesehen, aber vielleicht etwas übersehen?
Karten aktiviert – da gibt es die ersten Fragezeichen.

Zum Problem: Wollte ausprobieren und habe über Mapsource die kleine Proberunde überspielt. Ausgewählt, damit der Dakota auch Satelliten empfängt, bei dem Sch…wetter vor die Tür gegangen, dann auf Route wählen und auf LOS….Berechnungsfehler so bei knapp 90%.
Und diese Nummer probiere ich seit gestern Nachmittag in allen möglichen Aktivierungs- und Deaktivierungsvarianten der Karten, in den Routenformaten *.dbx (Garmin3) und *.gpx usw.
Immer das gleiche Ergebnis…..meine Frau, die sowieso auf Karten steht, lächelt nur noch milde…
Also, ich schrei ja nicht so schnell um Hilfe, aber hier komme ich allein nicht weiter. Vor allem, das Problem eines Users der sowohl mit Karten und GPS Gerät null Erfahrung hat, weil ich nicht weiß, wo ich suchen muss.

ich vermute mal, das liegt daran, dass grenzüberschreitendes Routing bei diesen Karten nicht möglich ist. Mit dieser Tatsache müssen wir uns hier an der CZ-Grenze auch abfinden.
Mal eine Frage an Felix:
Jeder, der an der Grenze zu einem Nachbarland wohnt, kann das Autorouting nur eingeschränkt nutzen.
Was spricht dagegen, die jeweiligen Landeskarten noch mindestens eine Kachel (oder vielleicht 30km) über die Grenzen hinausragen zu lassen? Die Karten würden sich dann natürlich überlappen.
Das würde auch einen weiteren negativen Effekt verhindern:
Scheinbar überlappen sich die Karten bereits jetzt, wenn auch der sichtbare Inhalt an der Grenze endet. Sobald ich in die Tschechische Republik fahre, muss ich immer die deutsche Kachel abschalten, da mein Legend HCx sonst auf der CZ-Karte keine Landuse-Bereiche oder Gewässer mehr anzeigt.
Ich weiß nicht, ob das ein allgemeines oder ein Geräteproblem ist.

Ich bin auf der suche nach einer Software gewesen mit der ich eine Route schnell erstellen und wenn möglich noch ein paar Geocaches die auf dem Weg liegen mit einbinden kann. Funktioniert mit dieser Karte hier absolut bestens, ich bin begeistert hoch 10 ..nur wenn ich die Rote auf meinen Oregon 550 übertrage und dort starte wird sie dort neu berechnet und das Ergebnis ist meiner Meinung nach nicht wirklich zu gebrauchen.
Kennt einer eine Möglichkeit die neuberechung der Route auf dem Garmin zu unterbinden ?

Schau mal oben in die Titel, es gibt eine eigene Seite wo es um effektive Routenplanung geht. Denn Ausschalten kann man die Neuberechnung nicht, aber das ist ueberhaupt kein Problem dank WinGDB.

hatte die deutschland-karte auf meinem oregon 300 installiert, mit der autorouting-funktion. bei der zieleingabe und suche nach einer adresse, wurde ich als einzige alternative zuerst nach der eingabe des bundeslandes /province gefragt. habe dann jegliches bundesland ausprobiert, tlw. auch nur den ersten buchstaben ausgewählt und den garmin dann suchen lassen. Es kam immer der Fehler “Suche nicht erfolgreich, bitte ändern Sie die Suchparameter”
Ist das problem bekannt, falls ja was mache ich falsch?
Addressuche funktioniert nur auf “alten” GPS. Also nicht auf Oregon/Colorado/Dakota/Nuvi
hat doch schon funktioniert, mit der vorgängerversion der jetzigen deutschland-karte. das muss irgendwie mit den einstellungen zu tun haben.
Nein, hattest evtl eine Karte von Garmin auch am GPS, dann wird die fuer die Addresssuche benutzt. Mit mkgmap erstellten Karten hat es (noch) NIE funktioniert.

No. if the blue background bothers you, you could change it to white in the TYPfile.

seit Tagen sitze ich nur noch vor dem PC und beschäftige mich erstmals mit Openmtbmap.
Absolute Spitze und dafür vielen Dank.
Ich habe die Map Baden-Württemberg und Schweiz installiert.
Alles funktioniert bestens.
Gerade wollte ich die Höhenlinien-Karte DE installieren. Nach der Eingabe für das Typfile kam eine Fehlermeldung
dass mit einer phyton.dll irgendwas nicht in Ordnung wäre und ich Dich kontaktieren soll.
Die Konturkacheln habe ich in das gleiche Verzeichnis wie die Kacheln B-W entpackt, die FID der Konturkacheln übernommen, vorher mit Mapsettoolkit überprüft.
Mapsource läuft noch so wie immer.
Was habe ich falsch gemacht ? Das Einzige was ich mir vorstellen könnte, dass die Konturkacheln DE nicht zu denen von B-W kopiert werden dürfen.

Ich hab Null Ahnung woher eine phyton.dll kommen soll, bzw zu was benoetigt. Konturkacheln von DE zu BW sollte eigentlich funktionieren. Welches create_with*.bat hast du verwendet?

ich habe die Alpenkarte in MS installiert. Dort funktioniert die Routingfunktion. Sende ich jetzt die geroutete Strecke ans gps (etrex legend hcx), dann werden nur die Wegpunkte dort angezeigt, die Strecken dazwischen nur als verbindende direkte Geraden. Was habe ich falsch gemacht?

I changed line#779 from SET Hex= to SET Hex=0 to solve the error.

The supplied batch in the download is ok. After my modification the generation of a map with contour lines failed. I downloaded the map again and extracted it to an empty directory and every thing worked well.
Ich habe das gleich Problem! Bei mir hat auch ein erneuter Download und entpacke nicht funktioniert.
Soweit ich das sehe ist das Problem ja im Abschnitt ":Loop". Irgendwie funktionieren die Zeilen "if %Hex2%…." nicht.
Kenne mich allerdings nicht so gut mit Windows-Batch aus. Weiß jemand wo der Fehler liegt?
Ich hab den Fehler gefunden. Es liegt dran, dass ich FID von 100-255 falsch eingelesen hab (ich hab nicht bedacht dass 255 Dezimal, in Hex noch 2stellig ist). Ab naechster Woche ist das korrigiert. Bis dahin hoehere FID auswaehlen.
I have found the bug. FID values from 100-255 where not treated correctly. This will be corrected in next weeks maps. Until then, don’t use FIDs below 256.

weiss jemand, warum man nach flächigen POIs nicht auf dem Garmin-Gerät suchen kann, während punktförmige POIS wie z.B. Briefkästen sichtbar sind?
Liegt es evtl. an meinem Garmin (eTrex Vista HCX) oder an der Art, wie die Karten erzeugt werden?
Unter openstreetmap werden seit Neuestem POI-Symbole für flächige POIs erzeugt.

Die neueste Version enthält jetzt wie angekündigt auch flächige POIs. Jetzt ist die Suche nach POIs in meinem Garmin-Gerät vollständig.

Karten funktionieren gut ! Mein Problem: ich kann über die Search Fkt von Mapsource keine Strassen suchen. Städte findet er, doch wenn innerhalb der Städte die richtige Strasse angeklickt werden kann, findet er kein Element. -> geht dann auch nicht auf
die entspr- Strasse, obwohl diese aufgeführt ist, und natürlich auf den Maps verzeichnet sind. Ich helfe mir da mit GoogleMaps – aber ist irgendwie doof.
Weiss einer Rat ?

warum gibt es für openmtbmap nur Karten im Garmin Format img.
Warum gibt es kein freies Format wie svg oder jpg.
Gut finde ich die Strukturierung der Seite hier(ein Lob). Ich bin normalerweise schlecht im Suchen – aber hier kam ich auf Anhieb zurecht
Weil es a) etwa die 100fache Groeße haette. Garmin .img ist ein Vektorformat und demnach sehr wenig Speicherbedarf.
b) ich nicht die Zeit haben die kompletten Renderregeln (etwa 6000 Lines Code, frueher einmal 50.000) fuer mehrere Programme mit unterschiedlicher Syntax up-to-date zu halten.

This is what I’ve found:
In my gps (Nokia N78 with garmin mobile xt) the names are only with initials ex.: Via Marco Polo become V M P
What I can do for this problem? I’ve tried to use a old map that I’ve in my PC (07/2009) and the map don’t have problems.
