Well finally after many years of empty overview maps, since a few weeks (as written in my last posts) mkgmap was able to write simple overviewmaps. So much faster zooming/panning when zoomed out fast in Mapsource, Basecamp, QLandkarteGT. From todays map update onwards, the overview map now has several layers. This makes the orientation when zoomed out far, still a lot better.

Therefore I also update the Europe map again, because on large area maps, this is even more important. However not only is it faster now on the desktop – but also on the GPS the basemap will become visible earlier, making zooming out work much faster (before I always had to compromise between speed on GPS, vs speed on Desktop, not anymore). Therefore however again I had to add some types to the .typ-file (0x11f04, 0x11f05, 0x10f0a).

Besides the work on the overview map, I will start to work on a worldwide basemap. The problem is that currently some Garmin GPS come with a routeable basemap, in some cases this destructs the routing of detailed maps, like openmtbmaps and velomaps. I will try to create a good basemap, that can go in combination with velomaps/openmtbmap showing the most important map features there are (rivers, lakes, sea, huge cities, borders, motorways, maybe some major railways…).

Fixed bug that Ireland and Northern Ireland was not updated over the last 3 weeks.

Further changes:

add bridge=culvert and bridge=boardwalk.

fix some more bugs related to autorouting in velomap/openmtbmap

and some more little bugfixes…

the new overview map at 150km zoomed out, Detail level High. Very fast…

Well lets make the newsletter a bit shorter this time but keep it more uptodate. First of all, if you downloaded Fridays maps, there was a bug in the overviewmap content to be seen at all resolutions in Basecamp. (the bug didn't affect the map view on the GPS devices, nor in Mapsource or Qlandkarte GT). This got fixed if you downloaded the maps on Saturday or later. So if you wonder about straight motorways appearing twice – there a gone again now. However a nice feature – of the background changing colour slightly depending on the resolution is gone now. Also the typfiles needed to be changed again (0x4b is now again the background).

For Mac OSx downloads, I renamed the downloads from COUNTRY.gmap.7z to COUNTRY_macosx.7z. This is only the name of the packed download. However if you did make a mistake and extracted the content not using "extract here" but "extract to "COUNTRY.gmap" the problem of macosx making automatically a kinda broken gmap installation package out of it is solved now. So if you unpack now to "COUNTRY_macosx" – then it will be recognized as a standard folder, which you can access normally and not recognized as a package.

Since Geofabrik is offering a Peru country extract, Peru is available for download too now – so the most touristic countries in South America now all got their own country extract – less need for the full South America continent map download.

Also in my last newsletter, I forgot to mention that the full Asia continent contourlines are updated now, to a good quality standard. They are still too large to be integrated into the maps, but if you really need them, and know how to use them, they are good quality too now. Also the Himalaya contours extract is updated, covering a larger region than before – and slightly better quality.

Next Thursday I fly for 5 weeks to Santiago de Chile. Twould be nice to go mountainbiking there (though I will need to rent a mountainbike), so if anyone openmtbmap user lives in or aroung Santiago, I'ld be happy to hear from you. I won't go there for holidays though, I'll be working from a co-working space, and try to push Openstreetmap / Openmtbmap and bicycle/mtb information there a bit.

Famous Machu Picchu in Peru – still some mapping to be done:

Well first of all, sorry for not informing about changes over the last month. I simply always wanted to wait for some more steps, before writing about them – and so this post will get quite long.

Most noticeable is that the maps now come with a simple overview map – so when zooming out in Mapsource, Basecamp or Qlankdarte GT, the map doesn't go blank at some point anymore, but shows cities and country borders, no matter how far you zoom out. This also heavily speeds up showing of the map when zoomed out far. It's not perfect yet, because the overview map has only one level, but I hope in future mkgmap offers more possibilities here.

Second big improvement – is that I completly reworked the Windows installer for the Europe map, and all maps which have contourlines as an external download. Now the installer asks for providing any other (optional) files and will unpack them into the right place. I also hope, that this relieves me from answering questions why sending maps to the GPS fails, or why the map is blank – both of which cost me quite a lot of time. Unfortunately yester (Monday) the mtbeurope.exe was broken till 14:00 CET – and the mtbeurope.7z just didn't make it for the download server sync, so please download it again today, if you downloaded it yesterday.

If you cancel installing the contourlines – or the map data the installer will try to never break something, but installation should be easy and straightforward. In case the contourlines exist already – the installer will not need to unpack them again. Should I ever update the contourlines the installer will make sure to remind you about it, however for everyone still using contourlines pre October 2012 (contourlines v1) this won't work – so please download newer contourlines.

With the housenumber address search, a new bug appeared, so I had to change some line types – for everyone using an adapted typ-file – please make sure to notice the new types: 0x1060d, 0x1060f, 0x1061b, 0x1061c, 0x1061d for both Openmtbmap and Velomap. Plus 0×10019 and 0x1001a only for Velomap. This should fix some very seldom case that the routing coudln't route to some addresses.

Other significant Changes over the last 6 weeks:

Nonconnected single pieces of roads are not routable anymore, they could break routing sometimes.

removed fenced=yes.

place=town, place=village and place=suburb on areas or relations is now rendered as urban area (lighter color than residential area, but still distiguishable from the background)

some improvements on the easy layout (unclassifieds / primaries

make trunk roads routable, if bicycle=no is not given. Make motorways routable if bicycle=yes is given…

Well this time just a short note. Sorry about the last map update, which had some white tiles, especially on the Velomap. The bug was caused by mkgmap, and all maps downloaded before Monday, or Tuesday were potentially affected. The problem hadn't appeared on Austria map, and some other I tried, so I didn't notice it. Even though I updated all maps on Tuesday, I decided to run the updates tonight again, so tomorrow as usual fresh Openmtbmaps and Velomaps…

Also the Europe maps are fixed since Tuesday/Wednesday.

Besides there are no major changes (well I needed to fix some things on the full Asia map again, as it grew larger than 2GB and the installer wouldn't compile, but this is fixed for some month now, or better until the installer itself will reach a compressed size >2GB)..

Woohaa, todays openmtbmap and velomap update brings, for the first time: Adress search down to housenumber accuracy! This is the first time for OSM created Garmin Maps. Big Thanks to the devs (mainly WanMil and Steve) who made that possible and published the first working beta version of mkgmap 3 days ago. So now all adresses that are tagged with addr:housenumber and add:street are now searchable. I must admit, I had expected this to happen already 1 to 2 years ago, but now it's here. Not all addresses in OSM are tagged this way, but the support is sure to be extended in future.

This only leaves proper overview maps missing on the feature side of what is possible with the old Non NT map format from Garmin and not yet implemented in the openmtbmaps.

I will update the full Europe Map tomorrow too (downloadable from Saturday updated), so you can enjoy proper address search with housenumbers.

You can also see the housenumbers as a popup now (if in OSM):

New Easy Layout – I spent nearly one week trying out and working on this new layout. It is now based on wide layout, and really makes an easy and simple to understand map layout. (tracks are red, pathes if not paved are brown). Also I made the forests greener – so it's aimed at leaving the trails and venture through unknown terrain. So for everyone who thinks the openmtbmap layout is too complicated, give this a shot (it's been implemented since 2 weeks).

MTB Routes are now brownish colour – I do think mtb routes are an important part of any mtb map, but to be blunt – in most places mtb routes are nothing but boring if you are on a full-suspension bike. Therefore they are now not sticking out of the map layout so much anymore, and make the map more pleasing too look at (less distraction).

I hid the links to the outdated and old CCBSA2.0 maps a bit on the website. I noticed quite a few people unintentionally got the old maps, not knowing what CCBYSA and odbl is about. I will still leave them online for a couple of month, but I think there is nowhere in the world, where the old maps still have much reason to be preferred. (especially on the Europe map this caused some confusion).

Here's the rest of the main changes:

reinclude amenity=parking

mtbroutes of low importance, not anymore visible in resolution 19. All mtbroutes shown one zoom level later.

Change text label sizes to invisble for service roads, unclassifieds, all tracks, roundabouts and steps. Also remove 20m lines text label. ( I do hope the broken firmwares due to why I did this once are not in use anymore)

Add natural=… grassland, reef, desert and cape. Remove natural=* (unknown).

and lots of other very minor changes.

Oh and if you like the Openmtbmaps – don't forget to donate after your next map download. Thanks if you already did so!

Well long time no see, here are News from Openmtbmap and Velomap again. I know it's been a long time, but I just didn't find the time to write down all the news during the last weeks. Largely responsible for this is also, that as I couldn't really do sports over the last 8 weeks, due to my ankle still not fully recovered, I fell into a bit of a motivationless hole. But well, in 1-2 weeks my ankle will have recovered so far, that I can go mtbiking, skiing and boarding again – I just hope that there will be another big fall of snow – like the last 2 days here in Vienna, where around 30cm of snow came down even downtown.

My main work during the last weeks, was focussed on bugfixing on the server side, and on making the maps for Mac OSX easier to use - here is now a guide for Dummies on Mac OSX

Thanks a lot for your Support – I promise to continue supporting Openmtbmap and Velomap as much as I can – even during bike trips:

So here the main visible changes over the last 6 weeks – additionally I did quite a lot of bugtracking on mkgmap and my build scripts – so that errors are less likely in case of corrupted data, or other crashes.

New Features / News :

– After extending the Mac OSx downloads to cover all countries, just like the Windows Installers, I worked a lot on improving the format, and making the installation as easy as possible – also for those countries where it is not practical to put the contourlines into the same download package. So for all Mac OSx users – here is now a description for dummies – showing really every click you need to do: http://openmtbmap.org/tutorials/install-maps-mac-osx/

Velomap: avoid steps only with toll=yes, not with avoid unpaved roads…

Add dav_scale for corrections against sac_scale (not used much yet though…)

add place=isolated_dwelling

remove military from resolution 24 (will be shown in resolution 22 and 21 only – so huge military areas are less of an map obstruction)

Add amenity=clinic, add natural=hill, consider backcountry=yes for campsites, and tent=yes for caravan sites. Better naming of amenity=fuel

Remove cemetary=yes from polygons. Add waterway=canal, waterway=drain and waterway=stream also as polygon. Add back landuse=field – but show it very very decent (mainly visible on PC – too low contrast for GPS by default).

Consider vehicle:forward=no, and bicycle:backward=yes. Also consider bicycle=dismount

add highway abandoned / disused when analysing tags on roads.

water=pond resolution 23 not 22 (add exception).

Footways, better classification if not usable for bikes and make them less visible.

shop=sports and sports centre less visible (resolution 23/24 instead of 22).

Don't render leisure=* and tourism=* as wildcard anymore for unknown values. Added some more values (all top 20 included).

Add rules for Slovakia and Czech Republic for Kraj and Okres substitution.

	Bugfixes:

update tinted background colour in high contrast typfiles (there was a typo that got copied over – only noticeable on newer GPS, older converted to white anyhow).

fix many bugs on the Mac OSx maps – mainly about address search.

fix bug mountain_pass=yes not rendered…

Fix Error that Asia Installation was not possible to send to GPS (mdx/mdr in registry but not actually present).

Well three weeks passed since the last map update, and quite a few changes over the last weeks. I'm still progging on both maps for Android as well as an online map, but also still adding or changing stuff on the main openmtbmaps/velomaps.

However as 10 days ago I broke my ankle, and ripped out a ligament, it means progress stopped a bit. Damn stupid thing, just jumping down 1m somewhere backwards, ankle folding over and misery there, no spectacular crash or anything like my "normal" injuries… So instead of making the best of the nice autumn weather mtbiking until the snow arrives, I'm out of order concerning sports for at least another 6 weeks.

Mac OSx gmap format maps now available worldwide
But so for changes – today or tomorrow I'll move all Mac OSx downloads to their dedicated download site, this also makes it easier for support as questions regarding mac osx will be found in one place. Main reason however is – that I'm currently finishing up rendering all maps for Mac OSx too. As for the windows maps, I took splitted the contourlines into separate downloads, so for many countries or continents where the contourlines are much bigger than the actual map data, it provides faster updates (you also only need to download the contourlines once, and then update only the maps themselves). To save traffic maybe in general I will in future only update the european country maps weekly, all other maps every two or three weeks? Let's see, it depends a bit on traffic how often I will update.

Other changes

I updated the contourlines for North America too now. They are based on viewfinderpanoramas.org 3" data – which isn't as detailed in some places as the 1" SRTM1 – however in general as it is voidfilled it offers a much better general quality – and also smaller download size. Canada contourlines are now also available for full Canada – and not stopping at 60° North. So if you update the North America maps, don't forget to also download the contourlines again.

I also updated the contourlines for some European countries, but the changes are minimal…

There have been quite a few changes to mkgmap, so some multipolygon errors in comparison to Mapnik are fixed too now. I too updated a bit the address search processing for Germany and fixe some more rather common access rules tagging mistakes. On the Velomap since 2 weeks, the routing on primaries and secondaries is a little bit degraded again, but the changes are rather small.

So that's been it, happy mapping and biking to everyone, I envy you but hope to be back in the outdoors ASAP!

Well, after my trip is over, yesterday and today I worked about 24 hours to get the map updates ready…. During my trip and the subsequent freeride and bikepark buikeguide education – the internet connection was simply too shaky, and I didn't have enough time anyhow (luckily 3 weeks biking, with overall 3 half rainy days only…).

So todays/tomorrows updates are the first using odbl licensed data (the last map update, used odbl cleaned data – but it was still CCBYSA 2.0 licensed). Therefore I needed to make sure to delete all old map data from my server, in order not to publish mixed data or something else. Besides Asia (full continent – as usual) all countries compiled fine (Asia got stuck somewhere). Besides I removed quite a few bugs – which mainly affected the velomap.

Both Openmtbmap and Velomap:

Better detection of steps=yes and stricter avoidance of steps for the Velomap.

Bugs (mainly) affecting the Velomap:

Mountainbikeroutes were faulty shown/included (should be used for better autorouting on paved streets only). Also fixed some bugs that maybe sometimes a cycleroute name was shown instead of the mtb route name in openmtbmap, and velomap vice versa.

Well and a difficult bug – some access=no ways were not shown in the map, even if bicycle=yes was present.

Also consider the unusual tag agricultural=yes – for openmtbmap this will be included in the next map update (probably on Thursday/Friday this week).

I forgot to add the race / roadbike layout to the batchfiles, I just did it, so from next map update you can also select the racing bicycle layout on gmapsupp creation via batchfile.

From this week onwards, map updates will be continued regularily again – sorry for the delays over the last three weeks, but I simply didn't find enough time to work on the maps (last map update was 18.9 with the last CCBYSA 2.0 licensed data – but as nothing else had changed, I didn't write a newsletter). I hope I have answered all emails/comments over the last 3 weeks, and didn't forget some (worked through all of them yesterday/today and tried to fix/implement all suggestions, or find the bugs. If I didn't answer something, or something still broken, please drop me another comment/mail).

So have fun biking this autumn, Felix aka extremecarver

(and don't forget to donate if you haven't yet done so, to keep this site running…)

Well, long time no see, here is another newsletter (and probably the longest ever) from Openmtmbap.org & www.VeloMap.org

New maps as well as old CCBYSA 2.0 maps up for download now!

(eine abgekürzte Version der News auf Deutsch gibt es hier: http://www.mtb-news.de/forum/showthread.php?p=9860635#post9860635 )

Maybe many of you thought, that there is no news due to me being on holidays, but actually I tried to work all of July and August, and improved many many things on the Openmtbmap and Velomap. But first of all, let's start with the license change.

The last map updates were on July 13, one day before the redaction bot started to take out all data from OSM, that wasn't compatible with the new odbl license. This gave me the chance to try out and hack away; to bring many improvements and some new features.

Yesterday, it was announced that the next planet file will be published under odbl. Therefore I used the last CCBYSA data, to compile new maps. Reason being, that the coastlines and boundaries are still from pre-redaction time, and hence no flooding should occur, and search working a bit better, and I don't yet need to change the license.

Consequently as of today you can find both the old maps from 13 July to download, as well as the new (last time CCBYSA 2.0) maps for download. Next map update will be in a week or two, and the license will then be odbl.

Changes to VeloMap – New Racing Bicycle Layout – New Mode for Roadbiking

Well, it's been quite some time, that I just dragged the Velomap along besides the Openmtbmap. Backporting changes, without really developing it further. Finally however, I decided, let's improve the VeloMaps and adapt it more for roadbiking. The big change is that the VeloMap have an all new "Racing Bicycle" layout / mode, which is 100% aimed at roadbiking.

Up to now the Velomap was simply a topographic map made for tour cycling. Now it's also a normal street map, with additional info for commuting and roadbiking. It features wide streets and very high contrast. Everything that hinders you from concentrating where to go or where to turn, has been taken out. This means for example that POI for shops have been made invisible, buildings taken out, and so on. What it still shows of course, are contourlines, and other stuff important for roadbiking

On the other hand the separation between paved and unpaved ways/streets has become even clearer. So you won't get lost on a cycleway that changes halfway from paved asphalt to gravel because you didn't notice it on the map.

Overall, the new Racing Bicycle layout, is more of a traditional road map, adding some of the great data openstreetmap has on top of it. (e.g. cycleroutes, oneway information for cyclists, the most needed POI like water or restaurants and bikeshops, but not all of the information that you would get from a topographic map).

So below let's have a look at a screenshot of Center Vienna – to see what changed. First let's go with the old classic Velomap layout (which is made for handheld device screens only – to be fair):

Mind, this above classic layout is not made for viewing on such a big screen. That's what the Desktop / Traditional layout was for, and it's already much nicer:

But now let's have a look at the all new racing bicycle layout. It gives even better orientation, as it is reduced to the max. On the other hand, on your GPS it will look even better, as it's still heavily optimized for small screens on handheld devices:

Yeah I'm really stoked about the new Velomap racing bicyle layout. Actually the Velomap is now two maps in one, because you have one mode (autorouting as well as layout) for roadbiking, and one mode mode for trekking/tour cycling.

So please help spread the word all over the internet and spam your friends with emails, or tell others in forums! To spread the message of the first real maps for roadbiking made from Openstreetmap data ever (and actually I would say the first ever really specialized roadbike maps)!!!!

Adapting both Openmtbmap and Velomap to the Activity Routing devices and Basecamp

Well, even though the outcome might seem unspectacular, it was over 100 hours of analyzing with artificial testmaps, to see how the new Basecamp 3.3 as well as an Oregon 450 and an etrex 30 do autoroute. My aim was clear, the maps have to work both with the old devices and Mapsource, as well as the new devices and Basecamp. After testing and debugging for ages, I managed to get a great result. The setup you have to do in the autorouting settings is different – so be sure to check http://openmtbmap.org/about-2/autorouting/ and for Velomap http://www.velomap.org/velomaporg/autorouting/ to see what you have to do.

I have explained all settings, but also given a short advice on how to setup the autorouting for CrossCountry, Allmountain/Enduro, Vertride/Hiking for the Openmtbmap, and Trekking/Tour Cycling, Roadbiking as well as Commuting for the Velomaps.

Bugfixes:

Well I tried to push through the updates since several days, knowing that it would be the last time, I render the July map data, and so since Monday, my map rendering server is running hot on a long queue of requests to rerender the maps, as more or less every day, some little bugs popped up, and me being a perfectionist, re-rendering the maps all over. (well the new odbl cleaned data was stuck several weeks without updates at geofabrik, meaning as of writing this now (Friday night) the new maps are rerendered just once more….

highway=unclassified & cycleway=opposite, was not routable against the general direction of traffic

ferries were not routable if part of a cycleroute or mtbroute – now if part of a route even higher priority. Same for aerialways

route=hiking now also shown if mtbroute is on the same way (furthermore the separate name is shown on mouseover)

fixes for route=foot / route=hiking depending on length.

highway=path & bicycle=designated was not shown (it was only routable).

Some bridges were missing, if part of a cycleroute or mtbroute

Oh and as of Saturday the bug making veloeurope.exe not working, is solved too now.

Openmtbmap 2012 Alps Discovery Tour

Well, all the work needs to come to an end… After virtually working 16 hours daily for the last two and half weeks, the next three weeks will be about testing the maps on the trail, and trying to get my fitness into a reasonable state again. I'll be starting Monday in Tux, Zillertal Austria, and then mak my way to Valais Switzerland together with a friend. We'll be mostly camping and t'would be nice to meet up with other bikers during this trip. I'll update this post on the homepage whenever I have internet, so you can see where to meet us up. We're looking forward for technical riding, so mtb:scale=4 is what we aspire to ride down. Riding up on dirtroads or carrying, with the occasional bus or gondola sandwiched in. Just drop me a mail if you want to meet and join. We usually ride 1300 to 2000m uphill every day, depending on the difficulty, and 16kg bikes don't pedal that fast….

I'll finish it off from 23-30 September in Leogang, with a Bikepark and Freeride Guide education (with the intention of better being able to know what bike tour operators want, so that I can kick out the not really targeted advertisements here, and rather get good tour operators offer their trips here).

Oh and as always, just a little reminder. Thank's to many people supporting me with donations, I'm able to do all that work. Please continue so, and especially if you haven't got an account yet, why not do it now. Only by getting new people on the boat, I'm able to continue improving the maps. Also watch out for news in the future, you'll soon be able to use Openmtbmaps and Velomaps on your Android phone.

Tourverlauf / Discover Tour Report and Plans:

German below…

We will be from Tomorrow Friday to at least Tuesday in the Valais vertriding singletrails and the famous Bisses (old water carriageways). Priority for mtb:scale=4 ways, with pieces of 5.

Saturday, hefty trails around Crans Montana, Sunday hefty trails around St Luc.

Monday – above the Berne Alpine Divide and back, and Tuesday to Thursday/Friday let's see – rather orienting to the east of Switzerland. If you want to join, please ride safely and fluently down mtb:scale=4, and be at ease with supertight and steep hairpin turns. Uphill around 500m vert/hour to keep power for the technical stuff down. We'll be mainly riding technical stuff, so decent vertriding skills needed. (here is a vid from last year, we'll ride trails of similar difficulty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz8zws1A1qU&feature=plcp)

If you wanna join, call me under: 0041774158772

Beim tragen so 450-500HM/ Stunde.
