Okay, the last map updates were a step in the right direction IMHO, but many of you were right that they were not "clean". I followed the route and decreased the map to three tiles now (main1, main2, mtb). Also routing offroad is now much more differentiated and in the tooltip of Mapsource (not on GPS for the moment, however I’m working on it…) and for every street type that could be unpaved, I take now mtb:scale/mtb:scale:uphill/ routes, tracktype, bicycle=no, bicycle=yes, bicycle=designated and sac_scale into consideration (about 150 different combinations for EACH road type, like path or unclassified) so that road classification is even better. Oh and riverbanks are back (was not nice to look at empy rivers, was it?)

I

n the mapsource tooltip you can identify which factors were taken into account as I put abbreviations into the name. These are much shorter this time, and on my Vista HCx in the routing page, very rarely does a roadname get stripped, on the map page while navigating even less often.

Routing over longer distances should work a bit better now, if the area is well mapped. I tried out a many routes that I know from the past and I was really astonished how closely or often better the route calculated is. Of course good mapping in an area is the key! – I calculated some routes around Garmin Partenkirchen in Germany, and hell, they must be a lot of fun on a mountainbike!

Oh and I nearly forgot to tell, Performance on GPS units when panning the map has increased tremendously, I found some hacks that even Garmin does not seem to know on how to change what gets drawn first, and panning/moving the map ist now a lot quicker (I’ld guestimate on averge 30-50% less waiting, smother moving without decreasing detail level)!

For downhill please enable shorter distance instead of faster route, and then more difficult runs (if more or less in the fallline to your destination) will be chosen. Also using mode bicycle sometimes produces very good results, In general car/motorcycle is better though. The main change with this map update is, that cycleways are not really required anymore to get somewhere, but tracks and pathes are well and often chosen. To get you understand the names, have a look at the abbreviation list:

Abbreviations used:

pri=primary / primary_link
sec=secondary
ter=tertiary
res=residential
min=minor
unsf=unsurfaced
uncl=unclassified
living=living_street
pdstrian=pedestrian
trk=track
pth=path
ft=footway
fp=footpath
brdlwy=bridleway
wy=way
rd=road
bywy=byway
serv=service

cy=cyclway
cwy=cyleway
bklane=cycleway=lane
bktrk=cycleway=track
opp=opposite
opptrk=cycleway=opposite_track
onwy=oneway
CW1=higwhway=* & highway=cycleway. (you should not tag like this).

rt=route
bk=bicycle=yes or simply bicycle therefor bkrt means bikeroute/cycleroute depending on way, mtbroute means mountainbikeroute.
mtb?? – i.e. mtb1:4 means mtb:scale:1 & mtb:scale:uphill4
xbk=bicycle=no
+bk=bicycle=designated

Current Issues: Tooltip on GPS does not show correct mtb:scale/mtb:scale:uphill information, the displayed symbols are correct.
Autorouting on GPS does not work over longer distances.

O.k. the newest Germany map is finally compiled and uploading. I hope that next time I will have my new PC to get it done faster.

On updating the maps errors occured, therefore updates come during the day/tonight.

Edit: 17:51

Edit: 23:33

Deutschland / Germany will be uploaded by approx 02:00 – there were some probs and I underestimated the time it takes (about 5 hours for compiling, 2 hours for uploading)

- Open Mountainbike Maps for Italy published —

It has not been so busy today compared to yesterday, but many people floded this site nonetheless. The maps were downloaded over 110 times.
So not as many people as yesterday (somehow the time of my statistic page is wrong – the yesterday count went up to 5000 page views and 700 unique visitors) but still many many mountainbikers interested in high quality maps. Great

I got behind the problem of the Swiss maps not being compatible with Mapsource 6.15.4 (been using an old program) but now it’s fine. Actually I only need to do one click now to update a map. Only getting maps done the first time really takes time. Except for Germany the maps compile with reasonable speed, so I will add some countries. Italy is just being generated and France comes too.

This weekend I gotta work elsewhere, so from tomorrow evening no more updates till Sunday we (Tom, Watzlaf and me) need to test some new raxski prototypes, so no new features will be added anymore over the weekend. Spring Conditions in the mountains (even too hot), but still plenty of snow in the east of Austria (around 4m at 1500m altitude at Hochkar).
Italy is uploading rigt now. For France you will have to wait till next week.

Look at Roma, it’s plastered with drinkinkwater ….. Italians still have a lot to catch up though on the OSM. Lets hope this map helps. If anyone speeks Italian – spread some words on italian mountainbike Forums please.

Hello everyone, what a day! I did not even get to mountainbike today. Been occupied with this site and automating the map generation (plus some improvements) the whole day.

I did expect maybe 100 visits today, but not 600+ (mainly during the last 12 hours). I don’t think many other websites put up privately get that many people on the first day…..
Had I known this I would have improved the page design a bit more before posting on forums (mtb-news.de, naviboard.de, naviuser.at) about this site. I feel quite ashamed about the mess the site is in…

Without help by mtb-news.de for hosting the files and the offer by DomainBox.de to give me free webspace for uploading the mapsets for you I bet this site would have been taken down already by my filehoster. (I decided for a €3.33 offer with 1GB, unlimited traffic – were you can be more or less sure that they either block your sites until next month or get rid of you according to what I read in forums about them once you get to around 25-30gig traffic per month).

Right now my CPU is running hot compiling Germany. I think it will be uploaded in around 2-3 hours time if there are no errors on compile……

I still need to configure some things, but I hope that I can automize the process so far, that a single click will wget the osm data from geofabrik, then compile the mapsets, and then automatically wput everything to Domainbox. The splitter produced some errors on output. There will be some routes and ways missing – I hope not too many. Please report back if it’s tolerable (I put the error on the dev. mailinglist of the mkgmap splitter so I hope in the following weeks a solution will be found) – otherwise I will have divide Germany by its Laender. Meaning no routing over Laendergrenzen (borders of the Laender).

- Hallo allerseits, was fuer ein Tag.

O.k. the main part of the work is done. I think this blog is usable now. I still have to get started on adding a nicer design to this page.

Austria, Switzerland and Bavaria are up and ready to be installed.

I will render a Germany Mapset overnight and have a look for a filehoster. Expect to get it earliest by tomorrow evening. Anyone got a tip which filehoster I should use? I’m tending for Mediafire because AFAIK files uploaded by non premium members to rapidshare are deleted after a certain number of downloads. Please help me out here. I expect the download to be around 400MB in size.

– Domainbox provided me with webspace for the maps, better for you and easier for me….
