Install Mapsource without owning a Garmin Device
Currently the best way to use the openmtbmap is to view it in Mapsource. There is a catch however. Garmin only provides updates, no actual installation packages. People who have bought a Garmin GPS will have a CD shipped with it including Mapsource. I recommend to use the most uptodate version by Garmin (as of writing this is 6.16.2)
Mapsource 6.16 fixes many of the bugs of the crappy 6.14 and 6.15 versions and is more than a very good alternative to Mapsource 6.13.6. It has much better autorouting and offers support for showing an altitude profile if contourlines are added (using create_mapsource_installationfiles_with_mkgmap.bat).
Classic Way of Installation without already having Mapsource installed (please install everything as administrator)
- First install at least one Openmtbmap map (meaning one country) by running the .exe.
- a) Download and install the free Garmin Training Center. You can get it here: http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-04
- Download Map Source version 6.13.6 from here: http://www.gawisp.com/perry/mapsource/MapSource_6136.exe or get Mapsource 6.15.7 or newer update from Garmin ( http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209 ). Note 6.13.7 has no worthy changes, but does not work correctly on x64 systems. Thats's why I propose you to use 6.13.6.
- Garmin MapSource is now installed.
- Attention, Mapsource will not start until you have a at least one map installed. So if you forgot step 1, do it now! Go to http://openmtbmap.org/download/ and download the map(s) of your choice
b) I assume that you can instead also install Garmin Basecamp which is more useful! (please report in a short comment whether it works or not). You can download Garmin Basecamp here:
Advanced Way of Installation without already having Mapsource installed
- First install at least one openmtbmap (just run the .exe)
- Download Map Source version 6.13.6 from here: http://www.gawisp.com/perry/mapsource/MapSource_6136.exe or get Mapsource 6.15.7 update from Garmin ( http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209 ).
- Unpack or extract the content of MapSource_6136.exe downloaded using 7zip (www.7zip.org), WinRAR or another good unpacker.
- From the extracted files, first run MAIN.msi.
- Then, run Setup.exe. Note: The sequence to execute Main.msi and then Setup.exe is important to avoid “Previous MapSource not found!” error.
- Garmin MapSource is now installed.
- Attention, Mapsource will not start until you have a at least one map installed. So if you forgot step 1, do it now! Go to http://openmtbmap.org/download/ and download the map(s) of your choice
Attention Mapsource 6.14 and 6.15 Users:
Please update to at least 6.15.7 which solves many errors in displaying the openmtbmaps which were present in 6.14.1 to 6.15.6. Note you can rename mapsource.exe to e.g. mapsource_6.13.6.exe and install different version side by side. The new installation will however allways overwrite mapsource.exe (so think about which file you rename). Garmin Basecamp version 1 and 2 are also to be avoided at all cost. Basecamp version 3 is fine.
Parallel installation of several Mapsource versions:
Simply unpack a mapsource update (see links above), run MAIN.msi and then rename mapsource.exe to something else. e.g. mapsource_6.13.6.exe and then copy it into your main Garmin Mapsource installation folder (usually c:/garmin). Now you can decide which of the two versions you wan't to use.
Spend a token to make the maps even better - Unterstuetz openmtbmap - fuer noch bessere Karten.
This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
perry has changed the folder:

have fun.

MapSource 6.13.7 kann man hier finden:
http://www.tramsoft.ch/gps/garmin_mapsource-software-upgrades.html#V06137
There is no prior installation of Training Center required to install MapSource without owning the original CD shipped with some devices. Just download the update and unpack the executable file. From the upacked folder, run the *.msi file and afterwards run the setup.exe from the same location. There is just one issue: The update does not contain any map content (e.g. basemap). An openMTBmap installation is required to get MapSource running.

Hallo extremcarver,
wo hast Du den neuen Link versteckt?
6.13.6 kann ich nirgends finden. Und alle anderen
Instalationsversuche mit 6.15.7 melden mir Runtimeerror?
Gruß und danke
Oli
http://www8.garmin.com/software/MapSource_6157.exe
http://www8.garmin.com/software/MapSource_6136.exe
bitte hilfe
danke
Link wurde geloescht. Hab einen neuen Link eingefuegt.

Parallel installation of several Mapsource versions
“Simply unpack a mapsource update (see links above) and rename mapsource.exe to something else.”
I don’t understand the instructions given above. If I download MapSource_6137.exe from the Garmin site and unpack it with 7Zip, the things I see are:
- maps with the local EULA files
- the map USB_Drivers
- the map Disk1
- the files Disk1.cab and MAIN.msi
- a number of local setup dll’s.
Disk1.cab contains a lot of files with long (installation)names. The file mapsource.exe is nowhere to be seen! Probably I do something wrong but I have no clue what.
Hallo,

I managed to install MapSource 6137 on Ubuntu 9.04 using Wine. I had to install training centre first, then it worked just fine
The maps also loaded under QlandKarte without any issues.
I have also created a reg file to setup the map for use with the MapSource as the bat files do not work under linux.I could publish these instructions if there is any interest.
I plan to use my Nokia 95 8GB to start mapping and adding data. Also hope to use the map data on here with Garmin XT on my phone.
I am new to openmtbmap/openstreet map and I am looking forward to using and contributing to the projects
Thanks to site creators for the great work you have done so far

Hi Tim, would you know how I can automate the transformation of the bat to the reg file for ubuntu?
i.e. a simple process taking the batch file, replacing the commands as needed and rewriting as a bash file?
I use ubunutu too, but did not get around moving all my gps apps to it from windows, as there are some progs that won’t run under wine or ubuntu which I use quite often….
Initially I tried amending the original batch file to a bash file by adding wine in front of the reg add commands ie wine reg add will run from a cli will add registry keys for you. But even after allowing for needing double bacl slashes because of escape sequences it was not adding them
So I used regedit instead. You can run this via typing wine regedit
From there I exported an existing may key and converted it to match what was in the bat file.
Copy the maps to your desired location. On my setup I copied it to the default location for storing Garmin maps when installed on Wine, where you would replace yourusername with current logon/home folder name. I called the folder where the map is stored MTBGB.
/home/yourusername/.wine/drive_c/Garmin
If you paste the code within the tags into a text editor, you would need to replace the MTBGB reference with the folder name you used for your maps.
then save file with a .reg extension.
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Garmin\Mapsource\Families\FAMILY_6393]
@=""
"ID"=hex:f9,18
"TYP"="c:\\Garmin\\MTBGB\\mtbgb.TYP"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Garmin\Mapsource\Families\FAMILY_6393\1]
@=""
"Bmap"="c:\\Garmin\\MTBGB\\mapset00.img"
"Loc"="c:\\Garmin\\MTBGB\\"
"Tdb"="c:\\Garmin\\MTBGB\\mapset00.tdb"
Once the file has been saved run regedit via running wine regedit
The select Registry/Import Registry from the menu.
Navigate to where you saved the .reg file and import the file.
It should then the add registry keys to
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Garmin\Mapsource\Families
I was then able to select this map from within Mapsource.
I did not need to run any of the commands as a root user and all worked under my normal user logon.
These instructions have been typed quickly and only tested on my own installation. So please let me know if any further information is required.
Tim
Hi,

I own a set of Garmin MapSource Topo disks (version 3.02), but I can’t install the old version of MapSource on my Vista 32bit machine – even in XP compatibility mode.
I downloaded MapSource 6.15.6 but “Previous MapSource not found” aborts the install.
How do I get MapSource up and running on this new Vista computer?????
thanks
You have to unpack the .exe and directly run the files or install another garmin product.
Hallo,
In order to replace 6.15.6 (the latest “flat Earth” version) with the last good version – 6.13.7, you have to remove the new version first – my attempt to simply install 6.13.7 over the new version resulted in no change at all. In fact it seems to be almost impossible to get rid of the new (rubbish) version – I ended up renaming it “MapSource6156.exe” and then reinstalling the good old 6.13.7.
The flat-Earth discrepancy up at our latitudes (Iceland) are ridiculously large – they make the maps totally unusuable.
The latest version of MapSource 6.15.6 on Vista (Build: 6002; SP2; 32bit) works just fine for me.
The POIs are displayed just fine.
I am using your latest maps (15.06.2009)
I like your map very much. Thanx a lot
Regards,
Micha
