Install*.bat – will register the maps for Garmin Mapsource
Before starting verify that you are logged in as administrator and give install*.bat administrative rights (rightclick "Run as Administrator). This is because install.bat needs to change keys in the registry – there is no other way if you wan't to see maps in Mapsource. Then just click on the install*.bat. There are several different install*.bat files which install the same map but with different layout (different .TYP-File). To change from one layout to another simply click on install of another *.bat file.
"Wide" is the high contrast layout made for Oregon/Colorado/Dakota or other units which have displays that don't have good contrast under changing light conditions. Therfore forest is left white, because riding through forest usually is the most difficult for readability. White background makes ways easiest to distinguish.
"Thin" is good for units like 60CSx which have low resolution but big screen.
"Classic" is a melange of the two.
If everything goes right it should look like on the following screenshot: 
Select Map in Mapsource:
You have to select which map is shown in Mapsource. There is a drop-down menu in the top left. The menu is placed to the left of the "+" and "-" buttons which are used to zoom in/out. It is only shown if more than one map is installed.
Update:
1. Run uninstall.bat.
2. Simply overwrite the old files and click again on install.bat (needed if there are changes in the names of some files). Running install.bat several times will not cause any problems. It will simply overwrite it's old entry (you can use this to change the appearance to switch .TYP-files)
Possible Problems under Vista or 7:
I have heard that Windows Defender may cause Problems, the same might be true for UAC. So in case the installation does not run clean, deactive both temporarily.
Problems: Mapsource doesn't start after installing the maps. You can use uninstall.bat to uninstall the maps again. Or better download Mapset Toolkit from here: http://cypherman1.googlepages.com/home and analyse what went wrong and/or delete any entry related to Mapsource from the registry.

Notice that when you send maps to your device they are usually put into gmapsupp.img. So if you don't want to loose your old maps make a backup of gmapsupp.img and the use gmaptool http://www.anpo.republika.pl/download.html#gmaptool to add the maps to your old gmapsupp.img. Or just as usual send all maps together from Mapsource to your unit. This is also true for using Sendmap.
Installation directly to PNA without Garmin Mapsource:
Simply run create_gmapsupp.img.bat then copy the gmapsupp.img to your GPS into the /garmin folder (gmapsupp.img MUST NOT BE RENAMED on many GPS – even though on newer GPS like Dakota/Oregon you can have several *.img in /garmin folder which will be read, there are often problems associated to this so I recommend not doing this). You can also use sendmap for this (compatible to Windows, Linux, Mac). Get it from here: http://www.cgpsmapper.com/buy.htm Or use mkgmap instead. Both programs run on most platforms.
Installation of the Contourlines
Use the create_mapsource_installationfiles.bat (always use the one that comes with the maps, not the ones that comes with the contourlines if you mix maps with contourlines into one installation).
Alternatively you can use gmaptool or mapsettoolkit too. Note that theese are only contourlines, not a DEM (Digital Elevation Model). Some Garmin maps come with DEM, but it is unknown how to create them.
Windows 2000 Users:
reg.exe is not installed by default. Please install it from the windows setup CD (or google it). See here: www.pcwelt.de/start/software_os/windows/praxis/102055/best_of_praxis_windows_intern/index8.html
Changing / Moving the folder in which you have installed the maps
Attention, never change the folder from which you run the install*.bat. If you do this, then Mapsource will not start. Also if you delete the folder or the maps inside.
If you face this situation, or want to change the folder run uninstall.bat (again needs admin rights), and then reinstall the maps. (you can first move and then uninstall and reinstall, the folder from which you run uninstall.bat is not important)

Also ich habe mit Schritt B begonnen. Die RARdatei in einen Ordner am Computer entpackt, “create_gmapsupp.img” doppelgeklickt, aber es öffnet sich nur ein schwarzes Fenster das man nicht aufs GPS kopieren kann.Bin anscheinend ein Laie, es heißt aber auch Anfängerguide. Könnt ihr bitte helfen
Habe ich was überlesen? Welcher Schritt B? Welche RAR-Datei mit welcher Software? Was für eine MS-Version?
Eigentlich ist eine install.bat dabei, wenn entpackt worden ist.

Geht nicht (außer mit Luftlinienrouting, also mehr oder weniger ein Track). Musst pro Karte eine Route machen (oder halt DE runterladen).

Hallo zusammen,
habe bei der Installation folgendes Problem:
Nach Eingabe der FID, Buchstabenkennung und in welcher Auflösung (wide, classic, ect…) die Karte installiert werden soll, kann die Datei “mapset00.mp” nicht geöffnet werden.
Kann jemand zur Lösung des Problems beitragen?

das ist ja eine sehr umfangreiche Internetseite, in der wohl auch jede Menge Arbeit steckt. Dem Ersteller herzlichen Dank!!
Leider bin ich trotzdem mit der Anleitung für das integrieren von Karten in MS länger nicht klargekommen. Vielleicht lag es ja an meinem Alter (60).
Irgendwann habe ich es dann doch geschafft. Hier die Gründe für meine Probleme:
Mir war nicht klar, woher ich denn die Datei “Install_with*.bat” bekommen könnte. Deshalb hier noch mal der Hinweis, dass man die unter den Dateien findet, die entstehen, wenn man eine über das Kartendownload erhaltene ZIP-Datei mit z.B. 7-ZIP entpackt hat.
Für den “*” steht dann, wohl je nach Karte, eine andere Bezeichnung.
Nach dem ich das endlich kapiert hatte, hat alles reibungslos funktioniert und die gewünschte Karte tauchte, oh Wunder, in MS auf.
Installation in Mapsource hat geklappt.
Wenn ich aber eine Route berechne und mir anschliessend das Höhenprofil anzeigen lassen will, kommt folgende Fehlermeldung:

Hat das Problem schon mal jemand gehabt?
Habe OSM-Maps (Deutschland, Schweiz) problemlos in Mapsource (Version 6.13.7) installiert. Beim Versuch Openmtbmaps (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Baden-Würthemberg, Sachsen ) zu installieren ( mit install.bat der jeweiligen Karte) lässt sich Mapsource nicht mehr öffnen. Es erscheint der Hinweis, MS neu zu installieren. Das habe ich aber nicht gemacht, sondern die Karten mit der uninstall.bat gelöscht. Jetzt lässt sich MS wieder mit den OSM-Karten starten.
Wie bekomme ich die Länderkarten in MS?
Bitte einfach erkären, bin relativer Anfänger in GPS. Bisher nur bescheidene Anfänge mit GPS-Tuner unternommen. Garmin ist für mich Neuland! Als reifer Rentnerwanderer habe ich mir vor 2 Tagen ein Dakota 20 bestellt und bin beim Üben mit MS.

habe über gmaptool versucht Karte Dänemark in MAPSOURCE einzubinden, anschließend lief mein MAPSOURCE nicht mehr. Deinstallieren und Neuinstallieren funktioniert nicht mehr.
Beim Aufruf MAPSOURCE.EXE gibt es eine Fehlermeldung.
Hat jemand eine Idee, wie man das wieder retten kann.

Entschuldige mein kindergarten deutsch, bin schlieslich ‘ne niederländer.
Es gib ein kleines diagnoseprogram. Wen du es aufruft erscheint ein tafel mit fehler.
Du kannst die “errors” anstreichen und deïnstallieren vom Mapsource.
Dazu muss ich noch melden das nur Mapsource fehlerfrei werd, die gefehlte karten stehen noch auf dem harddisk.
