For everyone knowing how to use Mapsource
There are some pecularities with the openmtbmap.org to pay attention to: It is not advisable to simply select maps by left clicking if you have contourlines installed. If you have, then you need to select maps by dragging the selection tool, else you will either send maps without contourlines, or contourlines only to your GPS. If you have not installed contourlines, you can do as you like.
For Newcomers:
Mapsource is the easiest tool to send maps to your GPS. There are some pecularities with the openmtbmap.org to pay attention to:
0. Select the openmtbmap in the drop-down menu if you have not done so already. The drop down menu is to the left of the "+" and "-" button used to zoom in/out. It is only shown if more than one map is installed.
1. Zoom out (best to 30 – 70km on details "Medium" ). You can directly click onto the zoom using the drop-down menu.
2. Select the mapselect tool:
3. Now click on the map – and while holding the left mouse button – drag it over the area you wan't to tranfer to your GPS. In the right pane under Maps you should see the selected maps now:

If you want to transfer maptiles from several maps, just select another map on the map dropdown menu – untill all maps you want to have on your GPS are selected (remember, maps previously on your GPS in /garmin/gmapsupp.img (basemaps are saved under a different name) will be overwritten, so include maps previously sent to your GPS too if you want to continue working with them). If the firmware of your GPS is up-to-date most GPS can handle up to 4096MB of maps. Not you can also click instead of drag with the mapselect tool. However if you have installed contourlines, clicking will leave you with either the contourlines only, or the maps only. So if in doubt, drag with left mouse button, and don't simply click/tick to select maps.
4. Make sure that if you wan't to have autorouting enabled, that this button is ticked:
5. Now choose any other mapsets that you wan't to transfer to your GPS (different map in step 0). Notice that by sending new maps to your GPS all old maps (except the basemap, or the Topographic extended map of Europe for some Colorado/Oregon that came with your unit) will be deleted. I think actually that you can't overwrite maps on internal memory (important for Nuvi) – but I have no Nuvi so I can't test this. You can preview which maps will be deleted by connecting your GPS to your computer and renaming the gmapsupp.img on the SD card to gmapsupp.img.bak and then restart your GPS to see which maps don't show up anymore. If you are unsure best make a backup of all the data on your GPS. 6. In the top Menu click on Transfer –> "Send to Device". It's fastest to send the maps to an SD/microSD card in a card reader because most Garmin units only support USB 1.1 and not USB 2.0 High Speed – so sending maps directly to the unit connected via USB will take much longer than to your data card. I recommend to send maps to external data cards and not GPS internal memory.
Spend a token to make the maps even better - Unterstuetz openmtbmap - fuer noch bessere Karten.

Hallo,
Christoph
Just for compliting your information: This weekend I tried out the Velomaps over 200 km and it works perfectly with it. All streetnames are showed in the right way. Only if I change the Map Sets from Velomap (or any other) to an openmtbmap it shows something like W????????? for names.
cheers,
Fanne
Well, Garmin Mobile XT is really buggy. And I have no clue why it doesn’t work. I though it had been the –lower-case, but if you write that the problem still persists, I don’t know the reason.
Had this issue for a while and didn’t find a solution until now. Rendered now my first map with the addtional parameters – seems to work now. Thanks Tom! And thanks for the mtbmaps.
Sorry, I wanted to reply to the naming problem in Garmin mobile XT (Michael February 14th) and did hit the wrong button.
Hello,
thanks for you answer. I’ve made an screnshoot. But I’m sorry, I can’t reproduce it at the moment. I had this problem with openmtbmap 13.10.2009 as I had it in a huge (3,8GB) image with 2 other garmin maps. I checked the history of this non showing street in JOSM and it was already in at this time. But it isn’t now. I selected all 3 maps at 1500km zoom by dragging the mouse. Unfortunately I didn’t have 13.10.2009 and I didn’t know if it was Mapsource 6.13 or 6.15 which I used. I tried to reproduce it, but it is gone.
So I think you can delete posts. Sorry.
If you want to have the screenshot with the street doesnt appear anyway, just gimme a short mail.
BR Robert
Hello,
I have the problem that some streets are not displayed on the GPSMAP even if they are displayed in Mapsource. There is a hint for this in the FAQ that leads to here but I read the howto twice and all 3 pages of comments but I can’t find a solution for this.
I transferred the map as described above.
Any hint?
BR Robert
Which GPSmap model? If 60Cx / 60CSx and you are sure the typfile is correct, please send me screenshots of ximage (download from Garmin) to my mail. If it is an old Gpsmap 60 C or older model, sorry not compatible with Tyfpiles.
Hallo,
Garmin Topo v3 funktioniert problemlos.
Openmtbmap Bayern vom 5.3 nicht.
Fehlermeldung: Error fetching first city record
Umfeld:
Win7 x64
Mapsource 6.16 beta
2GB SD-Card
Kann jemand weiterhelfen?
Danke
dirtbiker
If you prefer for time problem I can do a test with your style and/or typ correction (if you said me what I must change) and compiling a map with your style and typ with CreateIMG. I hope you find the problem your map is the best!
I’ve found the problem in the mtbitaly ( I’m italian ) if can be useful.
Thanks and sorry for the spam
Dear All,
i hope someone could help with my problem. Everything works fine in MS, all icons and street names are displayed but if i send the map to my mobile, only the first letter of street names and poi´s is displayed. What can i do?
Schon mal vielen Dank
I’ve the same problem, in the older maps this problem not exist, you have resolved?
I’m looking into this problem. Maybe it is related to me not using –latin1 anymore. Gonna check tomorrow if I find the time.
I've had exactly the same issue on my Garmin Mobile XT (version 5.00.40 s60.9) – street, city (and most other) labels were truncated after the first character and were followed by a number of strange special characters (like "??????"). I followed the steps in the "Render your own Maps with mkgmap" tutorial with additional params -latin1 and -lower-case to create a new img file. So, maybe -latin1 is really the crucial parameter for Mobile XT?
Hi,
Have the same problem on a symbian smartphone using Garmin Mobile XT v5.00.50s60.9 (GM XT) with openmtbmaps.
Names of streets and Towns are only shown with the first letter. In the find menu of GM XT is the same problem. Using the routing function in GM XT, it shows for the route details for example “turn left on M??????-???????” – only the firts letter followed by question marks for the rest of the name.
With the City Navigator Maps all names are shown in the right way (unfortunately this maps are absolutely not usable for good biking). Are there any solutions known?
cheers,
Fanne
Well there is some problem with me not using –lower-case as mkgmap option. I might just do it for the next update, and then see who complains…..
