New Maps

O.k. there are new maps currently being built. They have autorouting that blows everything what existed here before away. Just play around with them and please comment back on how you like it, and if there is something to improve.

I had no single Mapsource error anymore (found a bug this Morning, and Mark Button was so kind to produce a patch to solve it – there could be errors associated to the patch, but I haven’t found any). The biggest problem therefore are unconnected roads as of now and missing tags.

– Have Fun!

Ob BTW yesterday was the busiest day here on the website so far. Google Analytics counted 9000 pagesviews (3000 clicks on download page!) and around 2000 Unique Visits. There has been an article mentioning openmtbmap on teltarif.de, but the main referrers as allways was mtb-news.de, google, and mtb-forum.it. I think I gotta start learning Italian :) .

    Hi extremecarver,
first of all: GREAT WORK !!

second: the new italymap (2009.06.10) seems not to work with my Garmin Edge705, while everything was ok for the previous ones (2009.06.04 and on). In details: uploading to my gps (with mapsource – as usual) my Edge now DOESN’T SEE THE WAYS (??).
maybe the problem could be in the routing features: in fact in Mapsource – with the new map installed and selected in map tools for uploading – the “check” button for “include route data …” is in blank mode (not selecteble).

Its just on my etrex, not on Mapsource. In fact all streetnames are displayed in Capital letters but thats default. When i zoom out some roads still show your osm features, like bridge, tunnel, secondary or oneway. Dont know how to turn them off (showing streetnames at a certain zoomlevel doesnt help).

    Hi,
I’ve downloaded the OSM Netherlands mtb map. Routing for cycling is working very well. Since the last update (5 June) however, every street is shown with the OSM category next to the name, for instance Secondary Main street, Unclassified …street etc Is this a bug?

    • No its a feature. But it will be changed for better with the next update. The main reason is, that in Mapsource you can’t easily see what kind of road type is underlying (only cutting out the route), if an abbreviation for the street type is included in the name, on a calculated route it is easy to grasp what kind of roads the route is following.

        Hi,
I see you are using now abbreviations, which is better. But I still dont see any reason to use the OSM categories on the maps, too much information doesn’t make the maps look good. Besides, you are using different colours and line widths already to distinguish those categories, which is to my opinion good enough. Maybe restyling the colours / widths in the TYP file would improve the maps more. I have edited the TYP file, maybe for those who are interested can have a look at them at http://moh.freehostia.com/temp/openmtb.TYP

        • You can’t see in Mapsource when a route is calculated what kind of route it is otherwise because the routing line blocks the whole road view (okay you can see cycleroutes and mtbroutes shimmering through – but that is it)! Also there are no free types for lines to differentiate between everything using 0×07 currently.
I’ll have a look at your typfile. However I’ld rather go thinner lines than wider, because etrex/gpsmaps/edge Garmin units have few pixels.

          Thanks,
I use a Garmin Etrex Venture, I understand the problem that there are a limited number of lines you can use in mapsource/garmin to display all features from the OSM map.

One last remark: one way streets are shown on my etrex screen in big capital letters ONEWAY which is very distracting and too striking. Besides, you use already an arrow to indicate the direction (those arrows are too big in my opinion, in the typ file i edited i made them thinner).

        • On next map update (I probabely update Austria tonight), you can see new design. I took over yellow streets as most maps seem to use yellow, and background will be allways white from now on whithout performance hit. I don’t like wide roads at all. Personaly I would display all roads only 2 pixel wide. What I changed is that I also use a “point cloud” for mtb routes / cycle routes now. That is indeed much better for identification.
Without white background on etrex / gpsmaps GPS using yellow streets is a nogo, cause you can’t see them very well against background.

    Hi extremecarver,
thank you for your excellent job!

A bit of your popularity, here in Italy, became from a thread in mtb-forum.it and a couple of enthusiast users.
Please translate the webpages in english, there are some points that are in deutsch only.

Also please consider to include a changelog.txt inside the zip files.

    • Yeah I’ve seen that thread and read through it (as I monitor incoming links, and once many people came from one location I pay it a visit) with google translate. (I do understand a bit of Italian, but gtranslate is a bit easier….).

All things that are in German only are unimport stuff, or did I miss something?
