About the Maps – Please Read

ll map data on this page is published under CCBYSA 2.0. Data Source www.openstreetmap.org (based on snapshots from http://www.geofabrik.de/ ). I will update the mapsets at least once per week. Please leave a comment if you like the maps, and even better tell me recommendations of things to do better! More countries will come soon. Also Contourlines for more countries will be available. I will have a look into Kosmos and see if I can make the maps accessible online – I will need some time for that however.

 Copyrights:

All maptiles are compiled with mkgmap (http://www.mkgmap.org.uk/) using map data from openstreetmap.org. The mapsource installer is created with gmaptool and maptk OpenStreetMap data can be used freely under the terms of the http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/ You can use and edit the map data by visiting openstreetmap.org. All map images are therfore distributed under the CCBY SA 2.0. T

  -SRTM Contourlines Copyrights

The Contourlines data is provided by Jonathan de Ferranti where available and SRTM3" where no files are provided by www.viewfinderpanoramas.org Compiled also with mkgmap. All Copyrights to the contourdata remains with Jonathan de Ferranti. Note: The maps work best on your Windows PC when using Mapsource 6.13.7 (Windows XP) or 6.13.6 (Windows Vista – you might see white spots for some POI instead of the POI symbol in 6.13.7) – See here for Installation Guide:  tutorials/install/gmaptool-install-maps

Programs to Display the Openmtbmap

For anyone on the good side of earth Openmtbmap.org maps are now shown correctly in   Qlandkarte_GT version 0.13 or higher – QLandkarte_GT is compatible with all  big OS (Linux, MacOSx and well Windows too).

Mapsource – I recommend to use 6.13.6 (Windows Vista / 7 Users, or 6.13.7 for Windows XP / Windows 2000) – See here why: Mapsource_6.13.6 vs Mapsource_6.15.6

Problems – Help – Tutorials

A Beginners Guide can be found here: get started with openmtbmaps

Install Mapsource: tutorials/install-mapsource/

Install the Openmtbmap in Mapsource: tutorials/install/ explains howto use install*.bat

Alternative: use create_mapsource_installationfiles.bat to create new installationfiles.

Alternative: Install maps with gmaptool: tutorials/install/gmaptool-install-maps/

Discouraged Alternative: Install maps with Mapsettoolkit: tutorials/install/installation-with-mapsettoolkit/

Send Maps to GPS with Mapsource: tutorials/send-maps-to-your-gps/mapsource/

I recommend to allways send maps to an external data card and not internamal memory. (this way if something goes wrong, or maps would be damaged you run less danger of wrecking your GPS).

Alternative: Use create_gmapsupp.img.bat and place the newly created gmapsupp.img into /garmin folder on your GPS. Address search cannot be included this way.

Send maps to GPS with mkgmap (for Unix users): tutorials/send-maps-to-your-gps/mkgmap/

Mapsource Error / debug Mapsource: There is a problem with the MapSource registry. Please re-install Mapsoures and start again   Solve with Mapsource Fix Or with Mapset Toolkit

 Current Issues

- Maps of  or newer 19.10 If sending maps to GPS with Mapsource fails, run unregister_or_reregister_address_search.bat to unregister the address search index from Mapsource.

Note that currently searching for streets in Cities with a UMLAUT (ö, Ä, Ü…) in their name will not work (bug in mkgmap).

The address search does not yet work as good on the GPS as in Mapsource. This should be corrected by mkgmap updates (hopefully fully working on next map update).

- General: Autorouting over longer distances on GPS works only with Via Points. Solve with WinGDB: plan-routes-efficiently

- Autorouting needs attributes like tracktype, bicycle routes, mtb:scale, sac_scale, mtb routes and others to work well. So keep care to enter those details into OSM. (not all are needed, but enough for me to guesstimate wheter a street is cyclefriendly/mtbriendly or not).

- Non Connected ways and overlapping ways without node, this is the main problem and a problem of the underlaying map data – please check here: http://keepright.ipax.at/report_map.php

Only check/enable: "allmost Junctions" , "intersections without junctions" as well as "overlapping ways". This helps you to quickly spot the erros. You can then follow the link to Potlatch (or also JOSM is integrated for JOSM users) and quickly correct mistakes!

Watch out not to connect ways that are not connected in reality (i.e. a way crosses another on a brigde, here no connecting node is the right solution).

 Notice on Updating Maps

Please delete all old *img before copying over maps of 08. August or newer. New installation is not needed however. If you're not computer savy to be on the safe side, allways first run uninstall.bat (with admin rights), then copy in new files, and run install.bat to reinstall the map.

If you wan't to be notified by email on map updates please go to the frontpage and enter your email address in the subscribe field of the left sidebar.

Maps

last map  update: please look at recent posts – usually at least every 7 days with updates on Sunday/Monday or Monday/Tuesday. (unpack with 7-zip or WinRar, unpacking with "windows built-in unzip will not work and complain about broken archive), Contourlines (height lines) are available as seperate downloads – please scroll down to: contourlines

 Continents:

Africa does not compile correctly, download will contain no map tiles. Other continents should be working.

 Europe:

Contourlines (height lines) are available as seperate downloads – please scroll down to: contourlines

Contourlines

Please note, at the boundaries there might be some artefacts. I cannot change this currently. The interval of the contourlines is 20m. Note DEM creation is not yet possible. Where Available I have used DEM data from viewfinderpanoramas.org. This data is of much higher quality than other DEM sources, however I cannot publish this data under CCBYSA 2.0 – therefore the copyright of the contourline data remains with viewfinderpanoramas.org and I cannot include this data into the normal map downloads. See the quality differences here: www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/

Attention: The included batch (.bat) files are often outdated. Use the .bat files included in the country downloads instead

If contourlines are not visible in Mapsource – you can use srtm*.typ by using create_mapsource_installation_files.bat

.TYP-Files – influence Layout and Contrast

Current .TYP files are named clas* thin* and wide*. If you still have mtb* or white* in your folders delete them. They will not work correctly with new maps anymore. To change between them, simply doubleclick and run the different installation .bat with admin rights.

You can change typfiles, and therefore the map colours, to your liking with  http://ati.land.cz/gps/typdecomp/editor.cgi or by using http://www.maptk.dnsalias.com/

Feedback

Please comment if you like theese maps or even better tell other people about them (forums, blog about it, twitter, etc…) In case maps break Mapsource or don't work – please write exactly which downloads don't work and the time of download as well as your OS and Mapsource version (6.13.7  is recommended for Windows 2000/ XP, 6.13.6 for Windows Vista/7). Please note, I will delete your comment without notice if it is explained here http://openmtbmap.org/download/#problems-help-tutorials or in the FAQ
