Programs to Display the Openmtbmap

For anyone on the good side of earth Openmtbmap.org maps are now shown correctly in   Qlandkarte_GT version 0.17 or higher – QLandkarte_GT is compatible with all  big OS (Linux, MacOSx and well Windows too). Linux users can alternatively install Mapsource 6.13.6 in WINE.

Mapsource – I currenlty recommend to use 6.16.x (once it will be available). Mapsource versions 6.14 to 6.15.6 are complete junk, if you use it, please update.

Mac OSx users please use Qlandkarte GT or convert maps and use Basecamp 3 or Roadtrip: convert-maps-for-mac-os-x-roadtrip/

Problems – Help – Tutorials

A Beginners Guide can be found here: get started with openmtbmaps

Install Mapsource: tutorials/install-mapsource/

Install the Openmtbmap in Mapsource: tutorials/install/ explains howto use install*.bat

Alternative: use create_mapsource_installationfiles.bat to create new installationfiles.

Alternative: Install maps with gmaptool: tutorials/install/gmaptool-install-maps/

Discouraged Alternative: Install maps with Mapsettoolkit: tutorials/install/installation-with-mapsettoolkit/

Send Maps to GPS with Mapsource: tutorials/send-maps-to-your-gps/mapsource/

I recommend to allways send maps to an external data card and not internamal memory. (this way if something goes wrong, or maps would be damaged you run less danger of wrecking your GPS).

Alternative: Use create_gmapsupp.img.bat and place the newly created gmapsupp.img into /garmin folder on your GPS. Address search cannot be included this way.

Send maps to GPS with mkgmap (for Unix users): tutorials/send-maps-to-your-gps/mkgmap/

Mapsource Error / debug Mapsource: There is a problem with the MapSource registry. Please re-install Mapsoures and start again Solve with Mapsource Fix Or with Mapset Toolkit

Current Issues

- If sending maps to GPS with Mapsource fails, run unregister_or_reregister_address_search.bat to unregister the address search index from Mapsource.

- Note that currently searching for streets in Cities with a UMLAUT (ö, Ä, Ü…) in their name will not work (bug in mkgmap). Therefore I don't include Umlauts.

The address search does not yet work as good on the GPS as in Mapsource. This will hopefully sometimes in future be corrected. It also does not work inside Basecamp.

- General: Autorouting over longer distances on GPS works only with Via Points. Solve with WinGDB: plan-routes-efficiently

- Autorouting needs attributes like tracktype, bicycle routes, mtb:scale, sac_scale, mtb routes and others to work well. So keep care to enter those details into OSM. (not all are needed, but enough for me to guesstimate wheter a street is cyclefriendly/mtbriendly or not).

- Non Connected ways and overlapping ways without node, this is the main problem and a problem of the underlaying map data – please check here: http://keepright.ipax.at/report_map.php

Only check/enable: "allmost Junctions" , "intersections without junctions" as well as "overlapping ways". This helps you to quickly spot the erros. You can then follow the link to Potlatch (or also JOSM is integrated for JOSM users) and quickly correct mistakes!

Watch out not to connect ways that are not connected in reality (i.e. a way crosses another on a brigde, here no connecting node is the right solution).

- If you use Windows 2000 you need to install the "reg" command : Reg cmd at Microsoft. Batches are incompatible to earlier Windows versions.

- Note overflowing sea is not an issue, but currently not differently possible. Any comments about it, will be deleted.

Contourlines

Please note, at the boundaries there might be some artefacts. I cannot change this currently. The interval of the contourlines is 20m. Note DEM creation is not yet possible. Where Available I have used DEM data from viewfinderpanoramas.org. This data is of much higher quality than other DEM sources, however I cannot publish this data under CCBYSA 2.0 – therefore the copyright of the contourline data remains with viewfinderpanoramas.org and I cannot include this data into the normal map downloads. See the quality differences here: www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/

On Basecamp 3 contourlines will be visible as on GPS and not disappear.  You have to create the installationfiles by using create_mapsource_installationfiles_with_mkgmap.bat (which requires you to install Java JRE 6, and download mkgmap). Alternatively you can also use create_mapsource_installationfiles.bat (requires installation of cgpsmapper as maptk is not possible anymore) – but it has some drawbacks.

Contourlines updated on 27.05.2010 to solve eventual autorouting problems when integrated with openmtbmaps.

.TYP-Files – influence Layout and Contrast

Current .TYP files are named clas* thin* and wide*. If you still have mtb* or white* in your folders delete them. They will not work correctly with new maps anymore. To change between them, simply doubleclick and run the different installation .bat with admin rights.

You can change typfiles, and therefore the map colours, to your liking with  http://ati.land.cz/gps/typdecomp/editor.cgi or by using http://www.maptk.dnsalias.com/

In the Great Britain map we have now lost some highway=bridleway routes.  For example: http://osm.org/go/0EQRLbhBX-  these cannot be seen on the 28/08/2010 map on my Dakota 20.   In the previous update they were being drawn as bridges (two parallel black lines).

  • For all others who get the following error message when running "create_mapsource_installationfiles_with_mkgmap.bat":

    "— mkgmap working – please wait —

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space
            at java.nio.HeapByteBuffer.<init>(Unknown Source)…"

You have to increase the java heap size by editing the java command in the batch file. Change (around line 304):
    start /low /b /wait java -ea -jar -Xmx512M mkgmap.jar –index –show-profiles=1 –description="%srtm%_%date%" –country-abbr=%abr%%srtmtext% –country-name="%date%_%srtmtext%" –family-id=%FID% –product-id=1 –series-name="%srtm%_%date%" –family-name="%srtm%_%date%" –tdbfile –overview-mapname=mapset%FID% –area-name="%abr%_%date%_openmtbmap.org" %img999%

    To:
    start /low /b /wait java -ea -jar -Xmx1024M mkgmap.jar –index –show-profiles=1 –description="%srtm%_%date%" –country-abbr=%abr%%srtmtext% –country-name="%date%_%srtmtext%" –family-id=%FID% –product-id=1 –series-name="%srtm%_%date%" –family-name="%srtm%_%date%" –tdbfile –overview-mapname=mapset%FID% –area-name="%abr%_%date%_openmtbmap.org" %img999%

This change fixed the problem here.

I think I have found a couple of issues with recent updates – 19th August.  I can't be sure as this is only the second time I have installed the map.
In the Great Britain map on my Garmin Dakota 20, it looks like highway=bridleway is being drawn incorrectly.
See here for an example: http://osm.org/go/0EQFVPZk
West of Main Street, the tagging is only highway=bridleway and on the Dakota it is drawn as two parallel black lines and looks really ugly.  I don't think this issue was in the map a few weeks ago but I can't be certain. Tagging like this is all over the UK.
East of Main Street, the tagging is again highway=bridleway but also has designation and bicycle, horse tags etc. This is drawn nicely as a blue line.
Also, there is a water tower POI east of Main Street (not visible on OSM). It appears on the Dakota in German: Wassenturn.
Let me know if I can do anything to help.

    • extremecarver

Yeah, the bridleway & bicycle=no combination had some issue (bridge instead of crosses were shown). As for Wasserturm, that should only be displayed if language is set to German.

You don't seem to understand my point. The data is there. It's in Open Street Map already. Only it's not in this compilation or whatever this is called. It doesn't have to be retrieved in the field anymore. It's like a bug. In the holes there is nothing at all, a strange blank spot.

  • Geert Ribbers

    Splendid detailed maps. I'm impressed.
Unfortunately in the Netherlands there are a few holes. Those holes don't exist in Open Street Map. Is there a possibility this gets fixed?
    Thanks, Geert

    • xxlbiker

      Hi Geert,
OSM is a community, user driven project. i.e. it lives and grows with the contributions everyone makes. So it is also up to you to enhance the map data and fill the holes.
So, grab you GPS, drive, walk or cycle around your area, upload the tracks and tag them accordingy. The nice thing is, once you start adding data, others will follow and contribute to the same area. e.g. last year my favourite working area Lake Garda was a white hole more or less. Together with a handful of other contributors we have now reached a coverage of this part of the world.
      kind regards and happy mapping

  • Thank you, we'll try it on Bornholm soon.

I discover this site which is perfect for GPS user. My GPSMap 60Csx doesn't have enough voice to say thank you for that!

    * die Karteverschiebe
    * den Zoomfaktor für Strassennamen ändere
    * eine andere OSM-Karte auswähle oder zurück auf die openmbt schalte.

Bittebitte, mit Sahne oben drauf für "(all those guys) on the good Ubuntu side of the world".

    Gruß Pprian

    • extremecarver

Nein.

    KFZ:   no Preset
    Highway: livingstreet   und
    name:    ……
definert ist, in MS nicht funktioniert.  Z.B.  hier: http://www.openstreetmap.org/edit?lat=51.304362&lon=6.428923&zoom=18

    • GeoCounter

      Hallo,

        • GeoCounter

    @all Mac users:
